Lex Ronin of Richardson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lex Ronin. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Lex, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Depends on the day. On days I work with clients I am up at 5 am and usually running late ha. So making a quick espresso and saying my morning prayers while speeding to the gym. On “business” days at my home office the day begins with Prayer , A room temperature Americano . From there I take a moment to review my short and medium term goals in my notebook with some intention setting. After that , I put in my David Carradine VHS tape (yes i said VHS. Im an analog purist) and do 30 min of Quigong exercises. Finally I make a quick breakfast . Same one Ive had since visiting China , kind of a bastardized form of Oyster Congee. I eat breakfast while Im online and do my “Daily Disciplines” ie: the basic posting my regular content , checking my sites perfromance. returning calls , knocking out anything on my “to do” list that I write out the night before. Its not sexu

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lex Ronin, and I am the owner and operator of Ronin Fitness of Richardson.
All of my credentials can be found on my website: www.roninfitnessofrichardson.com
.
I have been involved in bodybuilding and martial arts for over 25 years, and I have operated my own fitness business for 13 years. Our brand of personal training focuses on one-on-one coaching in a private studio—no “Globo Gym” environment and no distractions.

The style of training we teach is a meat-and-potatoes, old-school approach inspired by the Silver Era of bodybuilding (pre-steroid era). We also include boxing drills and heavy-bag work because nothing conditions the body and mind like striking training.

My goal as a trainer is simple: teach every client everything they need to know to stay in shape within 90 days. When they leave, they should never need me—or any other trainer—again.

Physical fitness is simple.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Easy answer: my grandmother Rosetta. I was closer to her than anyone else in my family. She was a very colorful woman—kind of spooky, but not in a scary way. She loved Halloween, scary movies, and was incredibly superstitious.

Rosetta was very musical and even toured in a gospel band in the 1960s. She was also a gifted storyteller and, in my opinion, the greatest cook to ever live. She had an eccentric personality, and in her eyes, I could do no wrong.

I was always the odd one in my family, but with her I felt completely accepted and encouraged. Maybe it was because we were so similar. She lived with us during several long periods while we were growing up, and those were the best times of my life.

I can say for sure that my unusual level of self-belief—and my ability to trust my visions—comes 100% from her.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
That failure doesn’t hurt nearly as much as people think. It’s really just feedback. Even if that idea isn’t 100% perfect, it’s still the right attitude to have, because it keeps you moving forward.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
For other entrepreneurs, the desire to automate and outsource too early can become a major stumbling block. I blame social media for pushing this “laptop on the beach” fantasy of easy entrepreneurship. The coaching and SEO spaces are absolutely filled with that kind of slick emptiness.

Yes, at some point you do need outside help to run your business. But consumers can always tell when your brand shifts from a “direct-from-the-creator” experience to that weird content-farm vibe. And with so many people relying on AI, it’s only going to get worse.

My last web developer is a perfect example. When we first worked together one-on-one, he was incredible—coming up with nuanced, high-quality solutions that were worth every penny. Fast forward less than a year, and suddenly he won’t get on the phone, and his site diagnostics are nothing but canned videos.

Like I’ve said, people can tell when a company has lost its human touch.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Besides a very early retirement overseas? I will teach fitness, martial arts, financial literacy, and Faith to young kids for free. That will be my true Legacy.
