We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jen Sherman. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Jen, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Grab a cup of coffee, my bible and journal and spend the first 90 minutes praying, journaling, reading and studying God’s word!!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been a huge reader my entire life and always dreamed of owning a bookstore. I was a stay at home mom for over 22 years and when my youngest went away to college I finally realized my dream of opening a small independent bookstore in Malakoff, Texas in the Cedar Creek Lake area. The interesting thing about my bookstore, Bookish, is that we are a literary non profit. We look just like any other bookstore, however, we have a mission that directs everything we do. That mission, approved by the IRS, is to promote reading and literacy in the community by connecting people with books and authors. We are involved throughtout the year in community projects in addition to the retail store that is open 6 days a week.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me about work and how to be disciplined. It’s the biggest lesson I received from him and I am so thankful for how he modeled work and discipine. He is also the person I credit for me becoming a reader. He took me to the library every week and was always reading himself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many times I have wanted to give up on Bookish. I have often felt inadequate and it is a struggle to own a small business in this economy and especially in a small town. It seems just when I want to give up, something out of the blue and positive will happen at the store that spurs me on and keeps me from being discouraged!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am fully committed to my belief in Jesus Christ and His ability to save all sinners. I hope I can always share that message and God’s love and I lead with that belief in the decisions we make at the bookstore. I hope to always been an example of God’s love no matter how long it takes!!
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I absolutely love my days spent at the bookstore and I can verify the saying that when someone purchases something from a small business owner, they do a happy dance!! There have been many times that i have danced a happy dance with our manager after a big sales day!
