We recently had the chance to connect with Larry Whiteley and have shared our conversation below.
Larry , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My first trip to Bonneville Salt Flats for SCTA Land Speed Racing was in 2008. I have since been back to help drivers for the same event 6-8 times. In 2020, I decided to build my own race car and it has been a project fueled by the desire to build a beautiful race car and push myself to break a land speed record. I just this year was able to go back with a friend and began the process of earning the qualifications to make my dreams of a land speed record in my custom-built vintage belly tank race car.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am sculptor known for transforming brass and steel into nature-inspired works that blur the lines between art, architecture, and design. Drawing from the wild beauty of Texas, I create delicate forms—nests, branches, trees, birds—that resonate in both functional and ornamental spaces. My work has earned the trust of top designers and architects, leading to standout commissions, including custom chandeliers and sculptural elements for the Kips Bay Showhouse. A longtime collaborator with design entrepreneur Brian Bolke, I have been able to contribute to The Conservatory at Hudson Yards, Dallas and Forty Five Ten. My pieces appear in landmark spaces like the Ritz-Carlton Dallas, Reunion Tower, Crescent Court Hotel, Hunt Oil and the George W. Bush Presidential Center. In 2017, I was named Artist/Craftsman of the Year by AIA Dallas for my blend of beauty, craftsmanship, and architectural integrity.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I began to play sports as a child. I was fortunate to have the gift of speed, strength and agility. This was also what eventually led me to power lifting.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Honestly, I’ve had several moments where I thought about just quitting and getting a job. However, with the encouragement from my beautiful wife, I’ve been able to stay with my dream and continue to find the inspiration to make more art.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends know that my small family is incredibly important to me.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Immediately, I would stop worrying about time. We have a beginning and an end. It’s the stuff in the middle that counts, and we should make the most of it.
