We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tanner Garza. Check out our conversation below.
Tanner, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Getting outside has always been something that brings me joy and helps me recharge. I love to walk, hike, mountain bike, and disc golf. I’m constantly looking for a new excuse to be outside and around nature.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tanner Garza and my brand is Tanner Garza Photography. I have been working in photography for 10 years and have recently begun to focus primarily on interior design and branding photography. I’ve had the opportunity to work on such a wide variety of projects throughout my career I think I bring a level of experience and adaptability to my shoots. I am calm, focused, collaborative and really dedicated to making the best images for my clients. I also think my shoot days are really fun, something about photography has always felt really high pressure, but my sets are fun and relaxed.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I have had the privilege to know and work with so many great people throughout my life. I think I learned the most about photography from my friend and earliest mentor Andrew Hancock. He taught me so much and I am still learning and reflecting on the experiences we had working together. He put me in some situations I would never have had the chance to experience otherwise. I learned how to adapt, how to work hard and think through difficult problems, but most of all he taught me how to really go for it and try to make the very best work I can. If you haven’t seen his work look him up, he is still inspiring me to this day!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Many times. I think as a creative, a freelancer and a business owner it’s pretty common for that to enter your mind. There have been so many periods when business picks up and then slows down. In the quiet moments it can be really difficult to maintain your confidence. Over time I think it gets easier and you start to recognize the cycle behind it.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I try my best to make sure that it is. I don’t want there to be a difference between the two. We all act differently around different people and maybe a little bit more professional. But I try my best to be as authentic as possible. So the me you are getting on shoot day is absolutely the real me.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was kind and dependable and fun. Maybe that I made them laugh. That’s really it.
