We recently had the chance to connect with Mrs Averie Cotton-Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Averie, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
In these rapidly changing times, I’ve made it a priority to constantly evolve and expand my knowledge and courage. Embracing new experiences and stepping out of my comfort zone has become an exciting journey.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a multi-cultural, education-based stylist, I’m passionate about creating healthy hair transformations that empower my clients. My approach goes beyond just styling – I focus on understanding each client’s unique hair needs and delivering personalized solutions that enhance their natural beauty. With expertise in various techniques from color/lightening to natural hairstyles, I pride myself on creating looks that not only look amazing but maintain the health and integrity of each client’s hair.
My brand is “ShuggTheStylist”, my mission is to revolutionize hair care by combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of diverse hair textures. Working at JCPenney has allowed me to reach a wide range of clients, helping them discover their most confident selves through personalized hair transformations. I’m committed to continuous learning, staying updated on the latest techniques and products to provide top-tier hair care that celebrates individual beauty and promotes hair health.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My wife is actually a reflection of myself. We share the same astrological sign, and she complements my personality perfectly. I’m fortunate to have a partner who holds me accountable and encourages me to keep going when I feel like giving up.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are enough. When I was younger, I often felt inadequate in most aspects of my life. However, as I’ve grown older, God has revealed to me that I am actually more than I ever needed.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Integrity holds the utmost importance to me; I am a person of character.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m living my dream job, making people feel valued and showcasing their inner beauty. Beauty has always been my passion.
