Life & Work with Douglas “DOUGH” Jackson of Arlington Tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Douglas “DOUGH” Jackson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my entrepreneurial journey during my freshman year of college—a time when I was learning how to navigate adulthood and generate income beyond a bi-weekly paycheck. Minimum wage was around twelve dollars at the time, and I quickly realized that if I wanted to elevate my financial situation without risking my freedom, I needed to develop a skill or trade that could accompany my regular job. While adjusting to college life, I often found myself low on funds, without transportation, and waiting on scholarship refunds. The nearest barbershop was a 25–30 minute walk from my dorm, so I started grooming myself between haircuts. That simple necessity sparked something. I went to Walmart, bought a set of fading clippers with color guards, and began teaching myself how to cut hair through YouTube—learning techniques, tools, and everything I needed to provide quality cuts. As time passed, my dorm mates and friends began noticing my haircuts and asking who my barber was. That was the moment the lightbulb went off. I realized I had a natural talent that could not only earn extra income but also introduce me to clients, mentors, and business owners who would shape me into the entrepreneur I am today. Financial freedom was my initial motivation, but expanding my perspective allowed me to discover my true purpose—serving people from behind the barber chair. Over the years, I’ve become a safe space for my clients, a trusted ear where men, women, and children can speak transparently and receive honest, confidential conversation. The value of a barber extends far beyond the haircut itself, and that understanding has helped me build meaningful relationships, gain wisdom from diverse individuals, and instill confidence in every person who sits in my chair. Three barbershops, over ten years, and three different cities later, I’m now in my own personal suite—my safe place to change lives. I’ve remained committed to playing an active role in my clients’ growth and success by providing consistent, exceptional service and the most genuine version of myself every day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey definitely wasn’t smooth. Along the way, I faced challenges ranging from developing professionalism to learning that elevation often requires separation. I worked in three different shops before establishing my own space, and each environment taught me something about what it truly means to be a business owner.I was humbled early on, paying close attention to the mistakes and successes of the owners who mentored me. One of the most impactful lessons I learned was the importance of patience and the intentional use of time. How you spend your spare time directly affects your clientele, your habits, and your financial stability. I had to learn to stay in the shop even on slow days, to show up even when I wasn’t fully booked, and to consistently create content that strengthened my brand. Transitioning into an appointment-based barber also required me to condition clients to punctuality and proper shop etiquette. Balancing work life with personal and business responsibilities often felt overwhelming, and lack of structure can easily throw off your momentum. I had to learn when to shut the shop down for the day, how to schedule personal time, and how to maintain order as life presented unexpected challenges. My biggest struggle, however, was developing the discipline and motivation to push through slow seasons and transitional periods—whether relocating my business or recognizing that I had simply outgrown an environment. Through all of it, I stayed focused on the goal, prayed consistently, and showed up as the best version of myself every day. That mindset allowed me to leave everything—stress, worry, and doubt—behind the chair and keep moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is from the summer days when my friends would come grab me with a CD full of instrumentals. We’d sit outside with a boombox and rap until the streetlights came on, losing ourselves in the freedom of expression. Back then, we didn’t have much, but in those moments, we had everything—creativity, connection, and the joy of simply being ourselves. That memory continues to ground me. It reminds me that even in the midst of struggle, there is always beauty if you choose to see it. Life will challenge you, especially if greatness is your goal, but every sunset carries the promise of a new sunrise. Every day ends, and every morning brings another chance to grow, improve, and rise above yesterday. I learned early that no day is wasted. Every habit, every intention, every lesson compounds over time. And as long as you stay true to your purpose and consistent with your effort, the seeds you plant will produce fruit—often in seasons you least expect. That childhood moment taught me that joy and purpose can be found anywhere, and that even in tough environments, creativity and hope can thrive. That same energy continues to fuel the man, the entrepreneur, and the barber I am today.
