Check Out Erica Rodarte’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Rodarte.

Hi Erica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. All through school my notebooks were littered with doodles. Although I took a couple of summer art classes in college, I studied social work and graduated in 2020. The world was shut down, so I started painting. Through that I rediscovered my love for art and creating. After calling and annoying people, I eventually found an apprenticeship. I spent my time cleaning, painting, and even piercing. When I finally was allowed to pick up a machine, I was tattooing pretty much every day! I later made my way to Dallas and started at Mother’s House.
I’ve been tattooing for almost 4 years now.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a great road, but its not without struggles. Going through an apprenticeship is no easy task. The days are long, You are constantly working, not only apprenticing, but even having another job to be able to live your life and pay your bills. Although it was tough, I really enjoyed that time in my life . I was very busy and had a lot fun working with friends.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in American traditional inspired tattoos. I love to paint flash and take American traditional motifs and a bold style and kinda make it girly and fun. I’m most proud of the fact that I have amazing and sweet regular clients.
What I think sets me apart is that I always try to give the client what they are asking for to the best of my ability. I usually set up enough time for my clients to request any design or sizing changes they want in their tattoo. I aim to provide an environment where my clients can feel comfortable telling me exactly what they want.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor can be challenging but not impossible. I’d say, if you’re truly passionate about tattooing, draw. Just draw, create a portfolio, and get tattooed. You kinda have to put yourself out there. Now that we have socials, your instagram is basically a portfolio.
