Hidden Gems: Meet Mychal Taylor of OVO Financial LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mychal Taylor.

Hi Mychal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
MY JOURNEY — PROFESSIONAL INTRODUCTION

Sixteen years ago I started at the very bottom—literally washing dishes in the back of a restaurant. I didn’t know business, I didn’t know leadership, I didn’t know systems. But what I did have was hunger, discipline, and a refusal to stay average.

Within a few years, I worked my way from dishwasher to general manager at Mellow Mushroom in Covington, Louisiana. From there, I was transferred to Lafayette to take over a struggling location that was failing financially. In six months, that store went from the bottom to ranking in the top 25 performing Mellow Mushrooms in the country. That was one of my first confirmations that leadership, standards, and execution can turn anything around.

During that time, I met my wife—she was a bartender at the restaurant then—and she was the first person in my adult life to look at me and say, “You can do more. You can build something of your own.” That changed everything.

So I walked away from the restaurant industry when most people said I was crazy.

I started a parking-lot striping business with zero prior experience, zero knowledge about LLCs, business accounts, tax structure, or marketing. No blueprint. No mentor. Just a work ethic, Craigslist ads, Facebook posts, and nights where me and my wife would ride around putting flyers on doors. And what I didn’t understand in business I made up for by working harder than everyone else.

As referrals came in, that small striping business grew into a full construction-services company—doing demolition, commercial cleaning, job-site prep, and post-construction cleanup. At one point, I was hiring temp workers, coordinating job sites, and servicing new developments. I was generating a lot of revenue, but I learned the difference between income and profit—between working hard and working smart.

So I pivoted.

COVID hit, credit repair was booming, and I sold my portion of that company and launched a credit-repair business. We grew that business from zero clients to over 1,000 clients in six months. That success opened the door to something unexpected: insurance.

Initially, we added insurance simply as an extra revenue stream. But the demand, the impact, and the scalability of the industry hit me immediately. Within my first 90 days, I became a broker—a rarity in our industry—and I began building my own organization.

Within two years, we had over 150 licensed agents, promoted leaders into brokerage roles, and became one of the fastest-growing organizations in the company.

Today, four years in, my wife and I run an organization of over 200 licensed agents. We protect families through life insurance, retirement planning, fixed indexed annuities, and indexed universal life strategies. We help people build generational wealth, eliminate debt, structure long-term savings, and understand money differently.

What drives me is simple:

I am wired to outwork, out-learn, and outlast.
I refuse to stay average.
I believe God gives people assignments, and you honor Him by multiplying what He gives you.

My journey has never been about luck. It’s been willingness to start at zero, do the inconvenient work, and refuse to stop until excellence becomes normal.

And I’m just getting started.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
WHAT WERE YOUR STRUGGLES ALONG THE JOURNEY?”

When people look at my journey now, it looks smooth. But the truth is, the path was anything but easy.

One of the biggest struggles I faced early on was the inconsistency in revenue while building a business. We were getting contracts, we were growing, but the timing of money never matched the timing of payroll. I was learning business in real time—how to cover payroll, how to manage invoices, how to operate separate business accounts, how to structure taxes, understanding profit vs. revenue—and I learned those lessons the hard way.

I didn’t have a mentor early on. I didn’t understand business credit. I didn’t understand financial systems. And because of that, I hit a real downturn. My business was growing, but my personal life was collapsing. I reached a point where we were facing eviction and I lost my first work truck—not because I wasn’t working, but because I didn’t understand how to manage money in a business environment.

So at one point, while building the business, we had to move in with family. That was humbling. That was uncomfortable. But it was part of the cost of growth.

Another struggle was people—partners leaving, employees quitting mid-project, people not carrying the same level of responsibility that I carried. There were nights where workers simply didn’t show up, and I had to finish the job myself or find help in the moment because someone was depending on us to deliver.

I built while having children, which meant sacrificing time at home. There were days when I left before they woke up and returned after they were asleep. And the truth is, that cost me emotionally—but my wife stood by me, she understood the vision, and she supported the grind. She taught me how to be intentional with the time I did have.

There were also personal losses—we buried family members while I had deadlines, employees waiting on checks, and clients expecting deliverables. As a leader, you don’t get to pause life. You show up even when life is not convenient for you.

So yes, I failed fast, but I learned fast.

Every mistake gave me a new level of understanding:
• how to build systems instead of chasing money
• how to lead when people leave
• how to stabilize income when income is inconsistent
• how to build a business and a family at the same time

The struggle wasn’t the failure—it was failing without a blueprint.

But those moments shaped my resilience, my emotional muscle, and my work ethic.

Because leadership isn’t about avoiding adversity—it’s staying consistent through adversity.

And for me, quitting was never an option.
