Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Mauelshagen.
Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m doing nothing to do with my degree. I graduated from UNT in 2008 and wanted to be a teacher but no one was hiring at the time unless I wanted to move so I thought, what else can I do? I don’t want to wait tables the rest of my life! So I went on several ‘interviews’ including Herbalife! I also went to a ‘Career Day’ at a real estate office. There were only two of us there. It was awkward. As the presenter went on, I started thinking…I can do this! So I started my real estate classes in 2011 and got my license in 2012. I told myself I would give myself two years of working in real estate, it’s not an easy job to get started in! I was waiting tables 20-30 hours a week and working real estate 20-30 hours a week. My first year I had one closing…but 13 leases! I almost gave up. But I didn’t and my second year I sold 13 homes. I doubled my business about every year and hired my first assistant in 2014 and built a team in 2015.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I kind of went over that but I think the biggest thing I’ve needed to do is learn how to become a leader.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I started real estate before everyone else became one, haha! But I had to work hard to get the success I have had.
