Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Phillips.
Dan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up doing carpentry work with my father. At some point, I discovered that what I liked most about woodworking was being in the shop, rather than on a job site. In 2005 I moved to Boston to attend the two-year cabinet and furniture making program at The North Bennet Street School. After graduating I moved back to Dallas and began my career as a furniture maker.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was a bit slow in the beginning but things picked up. I’ve had a pretty steady flow of work over the years.
Sometimes I have too much to do and sometimes not enough. I have never advertised. All of my business has relied on word of mouth recommendations. I actually prefer this way of doing things.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with D.H. Phillips furniture – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a one man fine furniture making operation. I make all sorts of wood furniture for peoples homes. All of the pieces are designed specifically for the clients. I try to never make anything more than once although I have had a couple of things catch on and have made them a few times over. My furniture is made from the best materials that can be had. Everything is put together using traditional techniques with mostly hand tools. The design aethetic is modern with a healthy nod to the classical furniture of the 18th century.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Dallas because it is easy to do your thing and has a nice, slow pace. What I dislike is there is no good Chinese food.
