Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryant Bettez.
Hi Bryant, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Bryant Bettez and Donovan Richard entered the mental health industry through an unconventional path. With backgrounds as real estate investors, their initial goal was to maximize their rental portfolio. They converted two homes they owned in Fort Worth into group homes, providing housing for underserved demographics—including individuals transitioning from incarceration, those experiencing homelessness, and people navigating difficult periods in their lives.
Through their work helping these individuals, mental health hospitals began reaching out when discharging patients in need of housing. Despite having no background or experience in mental health, Bryant and Donovan offered what they could: available beds and a safe place to sleep. Within 24 hours of their first placement, they experienced a mental health crisis. These crises continued with different residents over the course of eight months. While various organizations came to assist, the support was inconsistent, and they witnessed the cycle of recidivism in the community repeating itself.
That’s when they realized something had to change. In November 2023, they made the decision to shut down the group homes with the intention of serving a greater purpose—helping the individuals who need it most, particularly underserved demographics.
Today, they own HomeRoots Wellness, a mental and behavioral health clinic that provides home and community-based services to individuals ages six and older. They meet clients where they are—in their homes, communities, or schools—serving the entire DFW metroplex with the consistent, quality care they saw was desperately needed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road at all. The process of getting credentialed with insurance companies takes an extremely long time—far longer than we anticipated. We initially thought we could be fully operational within three months, but we were mistaken. What we expected to be a straightforward timeline turned into a much more extensive process that tested our patience and resources.
In addition to credentialing delays, we made mistakes in our hiring. We brought on individuals we believed were essential to our team, only to later discover they weren’t the right fit for our business model. We also placed our trust in consultants who promised to guide us through the insurance credentialing process. Unfortunately, we later discovered that some of these individuals were handling things incorrectly—or in some cases, not handling them at all.
We’ve experienced many ups and downs throughout this journey. However, through every setback, we’ve remained focused on the bigger picture: the genuine need for quality mental health services in our community. That vision has kept us moving forward, even when the path has been challenging.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
HomeRoots Wellness is a mental and behavioral health clinic specializing in home and community-based services for individuals ages six and older throughout the DFW metroplex. We provide Mental Health Targeted Case Management and Mental Health Rehabilitation services, primarily serving Medicaid recipients and underserved populations who often face barriers to accessing quality mental health care.
What sets us apart is our approach and our story. Unlike traditional clinic-based services, we meet our clients where they are—in their homes, schools, and communities. This model removes transportation barriers and allows us to provide care in the environments where our clients are most comfortable and where real-life challenges occur. Our unconventional entry into the mental health field—witnessing firsthand the gaps in consistent care and the cycle of recidivism—gives us a unique perspective and deep commitment to doing things differently.
What we’re most proud of is our dedication to consistency and accessibility. We saw what happens when mental health support is sporadic or inaccessible, and we built HomeRoots Wellness to be the reliable, persistent presence that individuals and families can count on. We work with schools, community organizations, and families to create comprehensive support systems, and we’ve made our services accessible to Spanish-speaking clients with bilingual materials and staff.
What we want readers to know is that we’re more than a mental health clinic—we’re advocates for the underserved. We understand that quality mental health care shouldn’t depend on income, location, or circumstance. Our mission is to break the cycles we witnessed in those early days and provide the consistent, compassionate care that every person deserves.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
What might surprise people most is that we have no formal background in mental health—neither of us went to school for it. We came from real estate investment, not behavioral health or social work. Our education came from lived experience: eight months of witnessing mental health crises firsthand, seeing the gaps in the system, and recognizing that people were falling through the cracks despite the efforts of well-meaning organizations.
While we may not have traditional credentials, what we do have is an unwavering commitment to making a real difference. We’ve surrounded ourselves with qualified mental health professionals—QMHPs, LCSWs, and clinical staff who bring the expertise and credentials necessary to provide quality care. Our role has been to build the infrastructure, create the systems, and ensure that the consistent, reliable support we knew was missing actually exists for the people who need it most.
Some might see our unconventional path as a limitation, but we see it as our strength. We didn’t enter this field because it was a career opportunity—we entered it because we witnessed a critical need and refused to look away. That dedication drove us to learn everything we needed to know, to build a compliant and effective organization, and to create lasting change in our community. And we’re just getting started.
