Today we’d like to introduce you to Xavier Sanders.
Xavier, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Xavier Sanders, founder and Executive Director of BarbaraCares, has spent the past seven years turning his personal loss into a mission of transformation. After losing his mother to late-stage breast cancer, he felt compelled to create a foundation dedicated to supporting breast cancer patients and caregivers while expanding access to essential services like free mammograms in underserved communities.
BarbaraCares began as a tribute to his mother’s vision, but it has grown into something much larger. The organization is no longer just raising awareness; it is providing tangible support to people across Texas, including financial assistance, educational resources, and community events. What started from a place of personal grief has evolved into a trusted resource for many who need help navigating their breast cancer journey.
The road to success has been far from easy. But through persistence and a deep commitment to the cause, BarbaraCares has not only survived but thrived. Today, the foundation serves as a beacon of hope for those facing breast cancer, providing them not only with the means to survive, but the support to thrive.
As the foundation continues to grow, Xavier’s commitment to his mother’s legacy and his passion for serving others remains the driving force behind BarbaraCares. The work is far from over, but the impact they’ve made so far is a powerful reminder that turning pain into purpose can create lasting change.
A certified mediator, community activist, author (The Other Side of REAL – www.amazon.com/Other-Side-REAL-Xavier-Sanders/dp/1692885766), philanthropist, and motivational speaker, Xavier’s journey is one of transformation—both personal and professional. But perhaps above all, Xavier remains a servant, dedicated to using his experiences and skills to better the lives of others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This is definitely not been an easy road. Starting BarbaraCares wasn’t just about creating a new organization; it was about taking on an assignment that carried the weight of potentially saving and transforming lives. From the very beginning, there was immense pressure. I knew that what we were building wasn’t just another nonprofit; it was a lifeline for those facing breast cancer. The weight of that responsibility shaped every decision, every challenge.
Like most new ventures, we faced common hurdles—limited resources, doubt, and the struggle to gain traction in a crowded nonprofit sector. There were moments when the road seemed overwhelming: the endless paperwork, trying to secure funding, and wondering if anyone would believe in the vision. But we kept pushing forward, because we knew we had a purpose.
The breakthrough came when we found our lane. We realized that while many organizations are doing important work, we were uniquely positioned to make a significant impact in the lives of underserved breast cancer patients and caregivers. Once we embraced our specific mission, the obstacles became easier to navigate. We have navigated shutdowns, a pandemic, trends of decreased national funding, and more. Nevertheless, we discovered that when you’re in the right lane, you’re graced to operate within it. The challenges became less daunting because we were walking in alignment with our true purpose. And that made all the difference.
We’ve been impressed with BarbaraCares, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BarbaraCares is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting breast cancer patients and caregivers, with a strong focus on underserved communities. We specialize in providing direct assistance, expanding access to mammography screenings, and offering financial support to those facing breast cancer. What sets us apart is our hands-on approach—it’s not just about raising awareness; it’s about creating real, tangible impact in people’s lives through direct support and resources.
We’ve been recognized by every mayor across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, including those of Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Justin, and more, receiving awards and proclamations for our work. But what we’re most proud of is being deeply embedded in the heart of the community, doing the work for the people who need us most. Our organization is built on trust, resilience, and service, and we want the readers to know that BarbaraCares is not just a name—it’s a dedicated resource for anyone affected by breast cancer. Barbara cared, and we care!
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck—whether good or bad. For me, everything is guided by hard work, clear direction, and most importantly, God’s guidance. At BarbaraCares, every step we’ve taken has been the result of dedication, prayer, and a clear vision of how we can serve others. We’ve faced challenges, but I don’t see them as bad luck; rather, they’ve been opportunities to grow, adapt, and strengthen our resolve. We trust in God’s plan and believe that when you’re aligned with His purpose, the path forward becomes clear. Our success isn’t by chance—it’s by faith, hard work, and following the direction He sets before us.
