Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenishia Crockett.
Hi Jenishia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started preparing my own taxes in 1999, not even thinking it will turn into a business. In 2020 a friend of the family and a cousin asked me to do their taxes, and my business went from there and even those 2 I started with are still with me over 25 years later with over 711 clients that has been added to my client base.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While I was under 200 clients it was smooth sailing but once I got over 200 clients, I had to hire help because I was still working a full time job at the time. Doing taxes is the easy part, but dealing with the different clients that don’t want you to be honest on their taxes but I stay compliant with the IRS Regulations so when I receive those types of clients, I always pull out the IRS Publication to show them how things should go and why I do things the way I do. So a smooth road I want actually say but an interesting journey, oh yea.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business was started as just something to do to help clients get taxes filed, so I filed for free. After a couple years, my mom mentioned that I need to start charging to do taxes, since I was offering a service and using my knowledge. So for those getting charge, blame it on my mom lol. Not only do I do taxes, I help other tax preparers start their own tax business and once they worked under me a few years, I let the string go and let them spread their wings and get their own clients and make their own full amount of money and I start with a new group of tax preparers. I’m mostly proud that I can create tax preparers to prepare taxes the legal way and still maximize refunds. I want my readers to know that if it’s any goals you want to explore, nobody fails except a person that doesn’t start. At the current time I have a travel agency business and a trucking business, so you may see me with a business name of Tax & Travel Firm by Jenishia LLC as well, which is a part of my tax business and travel business.
What does success mean to you?
Success is anyone who don’t give up. As I mentioned earlier, nobody fails except a person who don’t try. As long as you try and don’t give up you will eventually succeed. Always remember small baby steps are still steps. After working my job for 17 years fulltime and doing taxes on the side. I’m now quadrupling my income from my old fulltime. That is what success looks like to me. I’m giving less than 9 hours a day to my own business instead of to someone elses.
