Mesha Holland on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Mesha Holland and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mesha, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think the most misunderstood thing about my business is that, because I am a home based bakery, my products should be “cheap” or “discounted”. But what’s failed to realize is that I put quality into my treats. I don’t skim on the ingredients. There is nothing but the best igiven to my clients and nothing leaves my door unless it is perfection.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Mesha Holland, soon to be Mesha Rule. Yes, I am getting married yall!
I own/operate Taylor Made Treats, a small home-based bakery that has a loyal following of clients and that makes me happy. I make custom cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, amongst other treats. Baking brings me joy and seeing the look of enjoyment on someone’s face as they taste something for the first time, just makes me ecstatic.
I use most of my profit to fund my special projects throughout the year like the Winter Essential bags that I make for our unhoused community. The bags include items that will aid in keeping them warm as they brave the cold. I also support the Lupus Foundation, as my mother and I are both Lupus Warriors.
I was born with a servants heart and I fully intend to live up what I have been tasked to do by using the gifts that were given to me.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The moment that I would say shaped how I see the world is the first day I started working in social services working with the homeless community. I’ve seen young and old alike, go through one of the toughest times in their lives. It humbles you like nothing else can. To know that lawyers, nurses, teachers are n crisis mode because life happened in a major way and now they have no place to call home. It teaches us that no matter how well you’re doing right now, we’re all only 1 missed paycheck away from being in that same position.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Wow, there has been many times that I have very seriously thought of giving up. There’s nothing more defeating than to put a lot of time and money into making something and no one respond to it. To have family that do not support for dreams and efforts. But each time I get the idea of quitting in mind, God steps in and say “No you’re not”. While it’s frustrating, I’ve learned to be obedient to Him, for He will never lead me astray.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would definitely say that family matters to me most. Real family is there no matter how good or bad you’re doing. I love my little family more than I could ever say and all that I do is for them.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I only had 10 years left, I would not stop doing anything that I’m doing now. I’d like to believe that I am living my life right and doing right by others. So, there is nothing that I would change.
