Trakenya Hayes shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Trakenya , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Energy is definitely most important to me! I’m an empathy so energy is what fuels me! I always try and surround myself with positive energy people! When a person’s energy is off, it sets the tone for any environment and it’s important exude positivity over anything! You never know how you can brighten one’s day just by giving positive energy and having a great disposition.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m 42 years old and I’ve been in the hair industry for about 24 years now. I would say that the one thing that makes me unique is the ability that I have to navigate through a numerous amount of clients in such a short period of time and deliver excellent service. Time management in our industry is most important because I don’t ever want to have my client’s spending their entire day with me because we all have other things of importance to do other than spending time at a salon. I definitely value the time of my clients as well as mine.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would have to say my relationship with my dad is most impactful in my life, because he has always seen me for who I truly am! He instilled discipline and a great work ethic from the time that I was a child. I’ve always seen how hard him and my mom worked to have the things that they wanted most in life. He’s always taught me to dream Big and that there is nothing that I couldn’t accomplish if I put my mind to it. He’s always been my biggest supporter and my biggest cheerleader. He always made me feel like I could conquer the world. He reminds me daily how proud of me he is of the woman I have to become. both my parents are great, but I’m definitely a daddy‘s girl.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh most definitely! This industry comes with some highs and lows, but you just have to be strong enough to withstand the hardships. There is no 401(k) that comes with our job we basically have to invest in ourselves. Often times people forget that we are also human and need time to ourselves so there’s that aspect as well. Sometimes you can become overbearing. I’ve had times where I wanted to just start over and go into another career! At one point I did focus on another career to become a police officer because that’s always been dream of mine as well since I was a kid. After being hired with Fort Worth police department, my clientele began to pick back up, and I started to question if that’s the path that I really wanted to do. I prayed about it and I felt that it was clear what path God wanted me to stay on. But I’ve definitely wanted to give up more than a few times.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Oh yeah! I’m the same, always no matter what! I’m a little more focused when I’m at work and with a client, but for the most part, I’m always the same outspoken, honest, friendly, fun filled ball of energy! I have a huge personality and I don’t hide it at all. Lol….
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My intergrity, humility, the purness of my kind heart and soul and just a great human being as a whole!
