We’re looking forward to introducing you to Larry Ladale. Check out our conversation below.
Larry, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
All are important. But in this perilous time we’re in now, integrity is paramount. You have to be smart about it though. There are so many fake people walking around Earth today. So many lost souls, who lack structure and accountability. Folks who absolutely WILL NOT say “I was wrong” or “I’m sorry.” Just being honest and keeping your word will have you standing out these days. Many people think being a good person is lame or corny.
If having morals makes me lame, that’s a hill I’ll gladly die on.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Larry Ladale. Singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer.
My brand is positivity, energy and love. People may not always remember what you said, but they’ll definitely remember how you made them feel. I’d like my music to speak life into those who listen. Music is powerful. So I’d rather make it with a fun groove and a message, than to promote evil and darkness.
We are so entrenched in politics, world news and gossip. My question isn’t “Who did you vote for?”. My question is “Are you a Jackass?”.
Do you look down on people and treat them like crap every chance you get? Or are you uplifting, positive, motivating or just plain helpful? I need good people around me and I hope I am that good person around someone else.
I’ve cheated death a few times. Life is too short to hate. I concentrate on love.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents and my elementary school music teachers. My mother made us crazy enough to believe we could do anything we put our mind to. The ultimate optimist. My father was hardworking and showed us nothing we want worthwhile in life will come easy. You have to fight for every inch and nothing is outright given. When I finally heard him say “My son can do anything he puts his mind to.” to a stranger, I was shocked and so happy. He was tough but every once in awhile, he’d soften up.
Mrs. Betty Newman told me I could sing, even though I didn’t believe her.
“You have a beautiful voice Larry.” My low confidence wouldn’t let me hear it was true.
I dodged singing in the school choir. Mrs. Scott, the newer younger teacher, chased me down to ask if I wanted to sing. She found me hiding under a desk, in a classroom I didn’t belong. When I told her “No.”, she just said ok and left me alone. I felt horrible and joined the next year in the 6th grade. I only did one recital and they gave me a medal anyway.
Years later, I found them both.
I finally got to talk to Mrs. Newman on the phone and tell her I became a paid musician. She was so proud of me.
But she died before she could ever come see me perform. Her family told me I was one of her most memorable students and they knew my name before we ever met. That was the craziest feeling ever.
Some OG white ladies believed in me, years before I even picked up the guitar for pay.
I’ll never forget them.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Study hard. Work hard. Play hard. Save your money.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I’m pretty straight-forward. I’ve learned to not be so predictable though. That can be dangerous.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Worrying about what anyone thinks of me. I’ve had folks tell me chasing music was foolish. They aren’t around anymore. There’s one doctor, if I had taken his advice, I’d actually be dead.
Go for your dreams because it can all be taken in an instant.
