We’re looking forward to introducing you to Morgan Combs. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Isn’t it really all of the above? Each of these qualities is vital when it comes to running a successful business. Intelligence allows you to learn, retain, and apply knowledge while also giving you the confidence to educate others on products, processes, and industry practices. The energy you bring directly influences how your business is perceived, and your attitude sets the tone for every interaction. Integrity is equally important as honesty and transparency are what build trust, and that trust is what keeps clients coming back. Without integrity, it’s nearly impossible to foster loyalty. Ultimately, all of these qualities matter, each in their own way, and together they create the foundation for long-term success.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been a hairstylist for 7.5 years, and the journey has been nothing short of rewarding. In 2023, I made a huge leap—I packed up, moved across the country, and rebuilt my business from the ground up. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to educate and collaborate with several companies and professionals in the hair industry, and I officially stepped into small business ownership that same year.
Right now, I’m working toward becoming a travel hairstylist, splitting my time between Raleigh, NC, and Fort Worth, TX. This path allows me to blend my love for travel with my passion for doing hair. I specialize in color and hand-tied extensions, and my approach is rooted in honesty and transparency.
My brand is built on authenticity. I’ve always believed in showing up as myself and creating a space where clients feel comfortable doing the same. I wanted my clientele to grow from genuine trust and connection, not from putting on a façade to please others. At the end of the day, I believe the relationships we build behind the chair are just as important as the hair we create.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve learned the most about work from other beauty professionals, though not always in the way you might expect. Early in my career, I was surrounded by the mindset that “time is money” and that double booking was the only way to succeed. Over time, I realized that this approach didn’t align with my values. What it really taught me is that success doesn’t come from seeing the highest number of clients possible, but from creating quality, personalized experiences. For me, “quality is money.” When you provide someone with a high-level service and a genuine, personable experience, the appointment holds far more value to them, and that’s where true success comes from. Overall, this perspective keeps me dedicated to my work and allows me to truly enjoy what I do.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
My first salon job was by far the most difficult place I’ve ever worked. As an assistant, I was constantly compared to others, belittled, and taken advantage of. There were even times I was expected to come in on my days off and service people for free, all under the claim that it was to “help me learn.” Everyone told me it was just part of “starting at the bottom of the totem pole.” While I did gain some knowledge during that time, it left me with a discouraging first impression of the industry.
Eventually, a particularly toxic situation pushed me past my limit. I was told I would never have a successful career in this industry, and that the person I worked for would make sure of it. That was the breaking point. Walking out of that job was completely out of character for me, but in that moment, I even began scheduling college tours to pursue a different career path altogether.
Looking back now, I can see how much that experience shaped me. As painful as it was, it lit a fire inside of me and pushed me to prove otherwise. I wouldn’t be where I am today without even the worst parts of my journey.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me will always be my real, authentic self. I have no reason to lie or pretend to be someone I’m not, whether that’s online or with my clients. People deserve to see the genuine person behind the work, and I believe that authenticity builds the strongest connections.
In today’s world, it’s easy for people to hide behind a screen and curate whatever version of themselves they want to show, just to “save face.” Over the years, I’ve met people in this industry who looked inspiring on social media, but behind closed doors, they were some of the worst individuals I’ve ever encountered. That disconnect only solidified my belief that there’s no real reason to pretend.
What you see from me publicly is who I truly am. The only difference is that I can be shy and awkward outside of my comfort zones, especially if I’m caught off guard, but even that is just part of my authenticity.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What pain do you resist facing directly?
The pain I resist facing directly is slowing down enough to sit with my own feelings. I have a tendency to keep moving, keep working, and keep pushing forward instead of giving myself the space to process disappointment, loneliness, or self-doubt. Avoiding it feels easier in the moment, but I know those emotions always catch up in some way. Learning to face them head-on is uncomfortable, but it’s also where the deepest growth and healing happen.
