Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Savell.
Cody, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After years in sales, I went to work for another roofing company(unnamed). After 5 years with them, I saw the ugly side of the roofing industry. My wife and I decided to start our own company and we did so in March of 2016. The name of our company is Bad Bear Roofing and Construction. Both of our families have a Baylor University background(thus the Bear). The typical upstart roofing company doesn’t make it through three years and we’ve been operating for almost 10 years now. Our key to the success we’ve had is truly honesty, integrity and treating our customers like our next best friend! Almost all of our business is referral business. The only paid advertising we do is some social media marketing. Our actual office is in Flint, TX, by Tyler but I’m a member and current President of the BNI SuccessNet Lewisville chapter that meets every week in Lewisville. I put a lot of miles on a vehicle but I love my work and also love where we live. Driving is just part of my “down time.” My wife and I have been active members/small group teachers in our local church(GABC) for 32 years. We are insured and have held an A+ BBB rating the entire time we’ve been in business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part it has been smooth. We ‘struggle’ a little every year from November through February because there are typically not as many storms during that season. This year has been a little more difficult because we haven’t had that “big hailstorm!” It seems like there are thousands of roofing companies so competition is one of the biggest struggles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bad Bear Roofing & Construction?
We specialize in Residential roofing but can also do commercial roofing regardless of size. I’m known for my honesty and I’m an insurance expert. One of my best friends owns a Property and Casualty insurance company and I always know that if I have a question about someone’s coverage I can get the answer from him. I’m also an owner/operator. I don’t have a lot of salespeople that I’m having to worry about and make sure they are properly trained — If you call Bad Bear Roofing, you’re probably going to be dealing with me! I also have 4 crews in East Texas and 4 crews in the DFW metroplex and my customers don’t have to wait to have a roof installed. I also have construction crews that can do anything from a small repair to a new build.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
The biggest risk I have taken was starting the business. It’s not just knowing I have to continue working to pay the bills but I also have a lot of people on my crews that depend on me for work!
