Matthew Conley of Northwest Dallas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matthew Conley. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Matthew, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day starts at 6:00 am with me putting some water on to boil. As that is going on, I shower, brush my teeth, say a little prayer and by that time my water is done and ready to be poured in my coffee. At 7:00 am, I am ready to start my day. Usually I catch the bus to the gym to workout for about an hour and after that, I may go over to my cousin’s house if she’s off from work or go downtown to hangout. If I decide to stay in, I’ll read or play my PlayStation, may be catch a few extra Zzz’s. During the week by 4:00 pm, I am preparing for work. I work with young adults who have intellectual disabilities, that shift is from 5:00 pm until 9:oo pm and sleeping overnight until the next morning. This is my normal Monday through Friday, the weekends start the same just with a few adjustments.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
What’s going everyone, my name is Matthew Conley. I am a southern gentleman from Fort Smith, Arkansas who resides in Dallas, Texas. Cool, calm, collected, and a Capricorn, I am happy to introduce myself to thee. A national traveler with more airplane tickets than speeding, I am known for being on the move.

I have two different fronts that I work on.

The first is my tutoring program that I do. I am a former grade school teacher and unfortunately my school was closed down. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to help the youth learn their basic skills. In November of this year (2025), I started a tutoring program at the South Dallas Cultural Center. It has been going great! To be able to interact with my old students, making sure that they have the tools and skills they need to succeed is my key.

My second field of work is doing Astrology and Numerology. I love astrology and took interest in it heavily about 15 years about after reading about myself. Numerology on the other hand, I’ve been learning and studying it for 10 years. Both have brought fun and excitement to the people I that I’ve interacted with.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Okay, don’t judge me yall.

About 6 years about in 2019, I had met this amazing guy by the name of Troy. At the time, I had just lost my grandmother and one of the things she wanted me to do was to get back into church. Troy, took me to his church one Sunday and the following Sunday I had joined. Not only that, he helped me realize that I was the ish. I was working for DART as a rail operator going out of town, I had a nice car, and apartment as well. He allowed me to be my nerdy self, I bought all the books that I could, and that help my knowledge flourish like ivy in the spring. We ended up breaking up in the end of 2021, but the part of me that was in his shelter was brought out and ready to run the world.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
This is an easy question. In 2023, my first year of teaching at the Academy of Dallas, I taught 4th grade. I was there 4th, 4th grade teacher by the time January had started, and they were over it by then with teachers. I remember one day, the wrote Mr. Conley is a b-word on my board, tried to erase it, and did a horrible job at doing it. It broke my heart, all I was there doing was trying to teach them and give them love that they didn’t have. I remember calling my mom, and she wasn’t the best support on the situation. She told me that I should quit, but I am a determined person, and I hate failure. After crying for a bit, the next day it was game on with my students. We had a talk and I explained to them what is to be expected of them. After that moment, we didn’t have any problems. A few of them wrote me notes to apologize and I still have one of them hanging up on my wall.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is what you get. Now, there are different levels to the way I interact with the public, I am always bubbly, with a splash of sternness. I am a welcoming person and I hold myself to the same standards both privately and public. Authenticity is a super power that many don’t have, along with common sense. I value myself in being myself. I’m known of being blunt, but someone has to be direct and upfront with people.

I don’t keep change, so why would I change. The public and private version are the same, no need to fake it.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story that I know will be told is that, Matthew was a traveler. Matthew spoke his mind, he cared in a way that didn’t need acknowledgement. He loved to read and promote history not only about his people, but of all. He made sure that the stories continued on and that if nothing else, learn to read.
