Rising Stars: Meet Zion Foster of Farmers Branch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zion Foster.

Hi Zion, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I am Zion Foster. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Irving, Texas, in 2011. Growing up, I’ve always taken an interest in Art. I started out drawing when I was 4 years old and was mainly inspired by anime and video games. I was the kid who always had a pencil and a journal filled with drawings, with an eye for cool, edgy designs. Fast forward to high school, I got into a graphic design class alongside some art classes, where I had two teachers who pushed me the most. My Art teacher realised my talents and challenged me to learn sculpting. From sculpting many different portraits of people, I started to see the beauty in everyone’s features, down to all the small details. I also felt sculpting enhanced my connection with God by realizing God is in the details, and this gift of creating was shared with me. On the other hand, my graphic design teacher helped turn my artistic talents digital and was also a key point in the start of my Photography career. In her class, she had a couple of DSLR cameras locked up in a cabinet, and I was one of the few, if not only, kids she would let run around the school to explore and shoot with.
At that time, I fell in love with taking pictures and portraits of people. I started to pour so much into my craft and felt that photography and Graphic Design are where I could combine all of the skills from the different art mediums I could do. I’ve always been an overall artist who could do any art medium at a high level, but photography is where most people noticed me, and that passion turned into a career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was not always smooth, but I know everything I desire is on the other side, so I keep pushing. Some struggles I’ve faced at times were not capitalizing on opportunities due to imposter syndrome, stolen equipment, monetary restraints, and people not showing up to creative shoots that I’ve been trying to do. The struggles all build character, and I always look at it with a mindset of it’s something that I need to go through to emerge as the best version of myself that can handle the blessings that are materializing in my life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist first. I create in any medium that speaks to me in whatever phase of life I am in. I draw, paint, sculpt, rugtuft, etc. My most recognized and specialized profession is Photography. In my Photography work, what sets me apart is my combination of graphic design elements and vibrant, punchy style. I’m most proud of being able to create my visions, see them come to life, and watch people resonate with my art.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would say that as I’ve grown older, I’ve become more of a risk-taker. I feel as though I’ve done part of life by the book of what society says people should do, and I don’t think that route is for me. I started betting on myself and doing the things I want to do the way I want to do it, and that has been the best risk I have taken for my life. Letting go of any negative what-if moments I’ve thought of and taking a leap into the mindset that everything I do is going to work for me.
