Inspiring Conversations with Angie Heflin of Angie Heflin Insurance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Heflin.

Hi Angie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story is full of twist and turns. I worked for “the Light Company” for almost 20 years. I grew up there and it was a great experience. I learned valuable communication skills, but it was an 8:00 am-5:00 pm job with little to no give in my schedule.

In 2004, an opportunity for a buy-out came, which I took. After some thought, I decided to go to school for the Dental Hygiene Program, as it had the promise of a flexible schedule and a competitive wage. This turned out to be a bigger undertaking than I could have ever imagined. I was in my early 40’s with two little girls tackling an exhausting schedule. With lots of support from my husband, I graduated 2010 from Tarrant County College with an Associates Degree and a Dental Hygiene Diploma. It has been a wonderful field and I’ve met some wonderful people. I’ve learned that it is truly fulfilling to help others, especially when you are part of a great team of professionals.

Dental Hygiene is a great career path, however, it is very hard on your body and you have a finite period of time that you can practice. So in 2021, I made the decision to get my insurance license, and sell healthcare insurance. My step-mom was a wonderful guide and inspiration.

I’m still working three days a week with my dental practice, and working to connect people to a healthier place (insurance or community care) the rest of the week. My husband has joined me and we work together to help others with their healthcare options, as well as building our small business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have found that nothing worthwhile comes easy. The decision to go to school was one that I put off for years. I really had to work my brain around that one. Once I made that decision, all the other decisions became more of a natural trajectory.
I missed two years out of my daughters’ lives, but the payoff was that they saw their mom accomplish something really hard. That is paying dividends now that they are adults.

The transition into insurance was real different for me. There is so much information to absorb and try to put into practical use. There are a million rules and ethical concerns, and there is no real guide. It was hard to get started, but we are building a solid business with great customers that refer us to their friends and family. People are so grateful to have someone that will take time and be their advocate. It’s a very rewarding job.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are Insurance Professionals specializing in Healthcare. We sell Medicare, Marketplace, Short-term insurance. We also have connections with multiple companies to provide Dental, Vision and Hearing plans.

We work from home, but we are very flexible. If our clients want to come to us, they can. We will go to them or we can meet in between. One of our goals is for our clients to trust that we are doing our best for them, so we will do whatever we can to make them feel comfortable.

There are many good, if not great insurance agents in our area. They can sell you the same products that we can, and we can’t speak for how they manage their clients. I will just tell you how we manage ours. For instance, if a potential client already has a good plan, there’s no need for us to convince them to buy something else. It could hurt them in the long run. We let them know that and it builds trust. If a client cannot afford insurance, we will do our best to find them something, possibly community based care or privately funded programs. We can be very hands-on, if our clients need and want that. We hate to think of people not having any recourse for their health.

What I would like for readers to know about our services is that we strive to be up to date and knowledgeable with our plans. We work hard for our clients and we care that they are treated respectfully and honestly.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Cleburne is growing, but it still has a small town feel. I find most people here to be friendly and open. I get a sense of gratitude when you offer to help.

I can’t think of anything that I don’t like about our little town. As the inevitable growth spurt comes our way, we will be working hard to retain the small town community feel.
