Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Marshall.
Candace, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2007. As a cosmetologist, I have always provided a wide variety of services for my salon clients. I began to do more and specialize in hairstyling for proms, beauty pageants, weddings and other special events after being in the salon for about a year. I would also provide makeup services, which I started doing right out of high school as a MAC freelance artist.
While residing in Tuscaloosa, AL (which is my hometown), I was flourishing as a stylist but had challenges of being a single mother of a 7-month-old. While trying to manage a full-time job, I started to work from my home, and with doing so, I completely transformed my apartment dining area into a full-service salon studio. In the midst of making the change from working in a salon environment to recreating the same in my home, I found myself booking more and more bridal parties and makeup services. I also began networking and collaborating with other local stylists. This is when I realized that I wanted my very own business. So, when thinking of the name for my business, I decided that I needed something that would represent my journey. The Three Zero Six comes from the number apartment that I lived in, 306.
As I worked towards the goal of my business, I also went back to school to become a Cosmetology Instructor, received my Cosmetology Instructor’s license and moved to Dallas. Dallas was the missing piece to the puzzle.
I knew it would not be easy but the opportunity to grow and make my dreams a reality was something I knew I could do in Dallas with the thriving beauty and wedding industry.
I settled into a salon suite located in Colleyville inside of Classic Image Salon. Here, I have really been able to work on my brand and begin to build my business. I also worked as a full-time Cosmetology Instructor at DuVall’s School of Cosmetology in Bedford while still working behind the chair and working weddings on the weekends. I still sub at DuVall’s when needed. Now, my focus is 100% on my business that is rapidly growing!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Being a single mother to a young child is a challenge when juggling full-time employment and working in your own business ventures. There have been many long hours and working 7 days a week.
My advice would be to write out your goals with realistic time frames. But keep in mind that it may take much longer than planned.
Never lose sight of your goal. When things get hard it is easy to get discouraged, but remember the reason you’re doing it all in the first place.
Do the hard work. Networking, advertising, working long hours and spending a little extra money on the tools you need to help you be successful.
Go to continuing education classes. Attend and listen to seminars about your field are also good ways to help you.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Three Zero Six – Hairstyling and Makeup Artistry story. Tell us more about the business.
In the salon, I provide haircuts, hair color services, relaxers and keratin treatments to clients with any hair texture. In salon and on location I provide hairstyling and makeup services, both traditional and airbrushed makeup, to clients with any hair texture and all skin tones.
I am most proud that I work with a variety of clients. I am also very passionate about what I do and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. Making sure that my client has healthy hair is of the utmost importance to me. I also thoroughly enjoy and am very proud that I am able to help women feel beautiful on a daily basis and on the important days of their lives.
Easy going, fun and stress-free is my goal. I want to make sure that my clients are comfortable, enjoy their appointment, and leave happy with her hair.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
My advice for finding a mentor is to reach out to someone who has many years in the business. Find someone who has a business you could see yourself working for. Their knowledge, wisdom and encouragement are priceless.
Networking is very important in any industry, but especially the beauty and wedding industry business. Having a network of people in your field who are supportive is a great way to grow. Most solid clienteles are built on referrals.
Both networking and having mentors have helped me grow. Gaining insight into aspects of the business I don’t know that well has really helped me. Networking, reviews and having a portfolio to show clients has been a really great way to grow my business since moving to Dallas. Getting to know venue owners, photographers, florists, etc. who can refer brides and potential in salon clients to me and vice versa is a great building tool for everyone.
