Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jarquin.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up I always knew that I wanted to do something involving math or science, preferably in the medical field where I could help people. Going into college I was set on going to medical school and becoming surgeon, I even began studying for the MCAT. During one of my healthcare field exploration classes we had a chiropractor come in and talk to us about what they do and how much they enjoy being able to help people who are in pain. He told us that “[he] didn’t choose chiropractic, chiropractic chose him” which I didn’t fully understand until later on. I was interested in chiropractic at that point but still wanted to pursue medical school.
Growing up I always played sports and continued to play soccer through college. I was always concerned about my health and fitness. I ate well, exercised and took care of my body so that I could stay healthy and continue to play the sport I love. Until, I tore my MCL while snowboarding. I will always remember my experience meeting the orthopedist. He walked into our room greeted me but never shook my hand, he sat down and turned to his computer to look at my MRI. Without ever touching my knee or doing any sort of test he scheduled me for surgery and told me that I would be out for 6 months and I wouldn’t be able to finish my season playing soccer. He may have spent 3 minutes with me and then walked out. As it was my senior year I contemplated playing anyway and dealing with it after the season.
At the time, one of my teammates was seeing a chiropractor and suggested I go see them. I was hesitant but remembered the chiropractor that came to speak to us. Reluctantly and without much hope I went to see his chiropractor. She greeted me with a smile, sat down and spoke to me at length and educated me on the anatomy of the knee and how exactly I injured myself. She then told me that she was confident she could help me but was honest that it would be a process. I trusted her and within 3 months I was back on the field and I was able to finish my season and was even able to play in the last few games, all without ever needing surgery or medication.
I finally had understood what the chiropractor had told our class. I had found my calling. I would be able to help people just like me, feeling hopeless with limited options. After that I applied to chiropractic school and have not looked back since. Now, I get to come to work and give people hope that they didn’t have before. I get to help heal them without having to put them through life changing surgeries or potentially addictive drugs.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been an easy road. Although chiropractic school does not have an entrance exam like medical school, it is not easy. Our curriculum is similar to medical school and we are subject to 5 board exam in order to get licensed. There are many late nights studying, early mornings working on chiropractic technique, and constant shadowing other chiropractors in order to become comfortable with patients. When I finally graduated the road became even more difficult. Finally getting to work on patients, you learn that not every patient is a “text book” patient. You encounter many different people with conditions you never learned about. You have to become comfortable being uncomfortable because people begin to open up to you about everything. And all this while you are trying to balance a life at home and many times you have to take your cases home to find a solution to their problems. Once I opened my own office the work-load became exponentially more. While I love what I do and helping people heal themselves and optimize their lives, I now have to make sure we can keep the office running, pay everyone, and wear many different hats to keep everything operating. However, no matter how difficult the road has been, I have loved every second of it because it has allowed me to serve so many different people.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Independence Chiropractic was founded in 2022 after 4 years of working as an associate to another doctor. That doctor became my mentor and taught me how to open my office, how to manage patient flow, and how to be successful. We specialize in evidence based chiropractic. We take very thorough exams along with x-rays so we can properly diagnose the root cause of a problem or conditions so that we can correct it through specific chiropractic adjustments. What sets us apart from others is that we tailor every treatment to each patient individually based on their unique exam, x-rays, and conditions. What I am most proud of is that we have now helped thousands of patients live their life independent of drugs and surgery and that number continues to grow daily. Readers should know that our office was established for on main purpose: to serve as many people as we can in order to improve their health and wellness and optimize their lives so that they can continue to enjoy their life to the best of their ability.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Our office is a faith based office and I credit God with my ability to have an office and serve people, I also credit God with the healing that happens for our patients. However, I was not always strong in my faith, I was “lost” for a long time but chiropractic and family is what brought me back to God. Through all of the struggles that I have gone through to be where I am at today I learned each time that the more I leaned into God and the more that I looked to Him for answers and comfort the deeper my faith grew. I am very open about my faith now but most people don’t know that for a long time I was “lost”.
