Meet Gus Gonzalez of Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gus Gonzalez.

Hi Gus, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Grew up in a violent home where I was verbally and physically abused. My parents got divorced when I was around 8/9 yrs old. That’s what drove me to anger and begin to get in trouble. I started selling drugs, being involved in drugs, at the age of 13. Had a kid at 15. Got more involved in drugs where I caught charges and went to jail for a couple of years. When I was 19 I get hit in the head with a bat and was put in the hospital and they didn’t know if I was going to live. This was my life I thought and I was going to die. At the age of 23 I went to a Christian rehabilitation for 3 months and there I learned about Jesus Christ more in depth. I got out and went back into the streets, back on drugs, back to the same ol. Same ol, long story short I went back to get help. Got better and started going to church, went to bible college, got my degrees and started a church

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it hasn’t been smooth. There’s a lot but one big challenge is pioneering a church has it’s difficulties

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed Electrician and that is my secular job

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Going to my dads
