Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Bynum.
Hi Kristina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my journey right after high school, driven by a love for art, science, and humanities. I found cosmetology, and it quickly became the perfect intersection of all three for me. I started beauty school near the tail end of my senior year and quickly realized it fit me with strong resonances: the artistry, the chemistry of color, the geometry of cutting, and the chance to work closely with people in a meaningful way.
Initially I started gaining experience and fine tuning my movements through high-volume hair cutting work, sometimes completing 20 cuts a day – lots of opportunities to listen and put the client’s desires directly into creation. That environment built a strong technical foundation and work ethic. Along the way that also led me into hair salon management, training, and helping open new franchise locations across the DFW area. Along the way, I was fortunate to learn from master stylists who invested in me. They reinforced the idea that perfect practice, not just repetition, is what creates excellence.
With a solid foundation in client interactions and with fine tuned hand movements I then expanded into chemical services and embraced more of the art and science pieces of the overall intersection. I spent years performing complex color services, balayage, and specialty cuts, while also stepping into leadership roles at luxury salons. I worked closely with ownership on salon initiatives, managed teams, oversaw buying for a in salon boutique, and continued to grow my own clientele behind the chair. Each role sharpened my technical skills and my understanding of what it takes to build a sustainable, people-centered business.
The most important lesson I’ve learned throughout my career is that the beauty business is ultimately a people business. Technique and trends are foundational, but trust, connection, and genuine listening are what let you connect your strong technical foundation to meaningful interactions and outcomes. Guests often share their lives including their families, dreams, struggles, and milestones. Being fully present in those moments is both a privilege and a responsibility. That human connection is what makes this industry so rewarding.
Taking ownership of Salon Le Volume became the next mountain to climb and a natural extension of my passion for art, science and humanities. I have a passion for sharing my knowledge, successes, and experiences to support and mentor the next generation of stylists. I believe in helping people see the beauty that already exists within themselves and giving them a stage to shine, whether that’s as a guest in the chair or a stylist behind it. Creating an environment where people feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued is at the core of everything I do.
Today, my focus is not only on delivering exceptional beauty results, but also on building a culture rooted in education, trust, and collaboration. My “superpower” lies in intuitively translating a guest’s vision into a cut or color that works with their face shape, natural movement, and lifestyle. Now, as a salon owner, I am learning how to share that intuition with my team of stylists so we can all grow together.
After more than 20 years in the industry, I feel incredibly grateful to use my craft to help people feel confident, beautiful, and empowered. It has taken dedication, long hours, and constant learning, but I’m honored to be part of this creative industry and to serve our local Frisco, TX community when they walk through our doors at Salon Le Volume every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are no smooth roads in this industry! This career takes time and a consistent focus and application of skill and learning. Early on, there were plenty of moments where I saw a result I didn’t like and had to make adjustments. Learning from the experienced and master stylists and making sure you always work within your abilities is key as you progress. Just as important was learning how to ask the right questions during a consultation so I could truly understand what a guest wanted, not just what they were saying. I had some incredible mentors to help educate me and share their knowledge, which has inspired me to do the same.
Moving into helping lead a team of skilled stylists also brings lots of challenges and opportunities to grow. Every team member has a different personality, communication style, and set of needs. Learning how to connect effectively with all of them takes patience, awareness, and growth.
Owning a business brings an entirely different set of challenges. There’s the financial commitment that comes with any entrepreneurship, the pressure of making the right decisions, and the work of building operational systems that truly serve the business, the guests, and the staff. As an owner, you also wear many hats. On any given day you might just as readily find me assisting with a client consultation or establishing a new marketing initiative or my favorite cleaning a bathroom! Staying organized and clear on priorities is essential. Building and supporting your team is key while also maintaining a willingness to own challenges and strive for consistent quality and results.
“The hard is what makes it great” (quote from a League of Their Own)! Seeing a team thrive, watching stylists grow in their confidence and success, and being able to provide an elevated, meaningful hair salon experience to the Frisco, TX community brings a great sense of accomplishment.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I enjoy my dual-hat role in this fun and challenging industry. As the owner and creative director I get to take a high level view and work on the end to end experience and help manage salon operations and staffing. I am also a master stylist actively working behind the chair for a portion of each week. That balance is very intentional and central to who I am professionally. Staying hands-on allows me to remain deeply connected to the craft, the guest experience, and the real-time challenges and opportunities stylists face. Ownership allows me to shape culture, education, and long-term vision.
As a master stylist, I specialize in precision haircutting, customized color, balayage, and complex formulations, always with the integrity of the hair as the foundation. I’m known for my ability to intuitively translate what a guest is envisioning into a result that works with their face shape, natural hair movement, lifestyle, and maintenance expectations. Similar to how a musician can “play by ear,” I can see an image or hear a description and quickly translate it to the specific techniques required to bring it to life. I also pride myself on consultations, asking the right questions, truly listening, and creating looks that are both beautiful and realistic for clients to maintain at home.
Equally important to me is the personal connection side of the work. I’m known for building trust, creating genuine connection, and making people feel seen and heard. The beauty industry is a people business, and that emotional presence is just as critical as technical skill. That philosophy guides not only how I work with guests, but how I lead and mentor stylists.
As the owner of Salon Le Volume, I’m proud of creating an environment where both guests and stylists can thrive. I’m deeply passionate about sharing my knowledge, successes, and experiences to help develop the next generation of stylists. Education, “perfect practice,” and open communication are pillars of our culture. I love helping people recognize the beauty and potential already within them and giving them a stage to shine. Whether that’s a guest in the chair or a stylist growing into their confidence behind it.
What sets me apart is the combination of high-level technical skill, intuitive artistry, leadership experience, and a genuine commitment to people. My background spans high-volume technical training, high-end luxury services, management, education, and business ownership. I’ve also drawn inspiration from art, music, and extensive travel, which influences how I approach creativity, conversation, and customization.
What I’m most proud of is building something that goes beyond hair. A salon that delivers an exceptional experience to the Frisco, TX community, a team that is supported and thriving, and a career rooted in integrity, connection, and growth. While Salon Le Volume is a reflection of that work, my goal is also to continue expanding my voice and impact within the industry through education, leadership, and future opportunities that allow me to share what I’ve learned on a broader scale.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love music and I also love singing personally, My passion has always been rooted in the arts, and before hair, music played a big role in my life. Coming up through school I competed in singing up through the regional levels with choir. I’ve performed at small local and family gatherings and really enjoy that challenge. As life and career grew busier, that passion took a back seat — but I’m currently working on intentionally bringing music and singing back into my life as a creative outlet and source of enduring joy.
