Community Highlights: Meet Chris McMullen of Anew Counseling DFW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris McMullen.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always had a love of understanding what made people tick and observing people as a young teen and wondering how they became who they were. These questions lead me to a lifetime of trying to understand people, their motivations, their beliefs, and how that becomes who they are. After being aware of this interest in high school in led me to pursue a degree in Psychology from Texas Tech University and then pursuing my Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely was not a smooth road to get there. At one point, I wasn’t sure I wanted to do continue with my degree in grad school. I was going through an internal crisis with my self at that point and wasn’t sure which direction to turn. It definitely helps me with understanding my clients now that struggle to find their purpose. Also, when I was working in community mental health, it sometimes feels that all we do is stymie the bleeding of people dealing with homelessness, lack of support system, and life skills to help them improve their conditions. It caused my to question if I was making a difference for a period of time with seeing people chronically struggle. Thankfully I began to accept what I had control over in helping people improve and grow and accepting those that weren’t quite ready to change.

We’ve been impressed with Anew Counseling DFW, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is a group counseling business that helps couples and individuals receive empathetic, connected care in order to help them feel fully seen and understood. We specialize in addiction and trauma. We really want our clients to be seen with the issues that they are coming in with and meet them with the love of Christ. Although we are a Christian based company, we meet people where they are at in their process. We also want to relate to people where they are at and demonstrate that by being vulnerable with them, as appropriate, to connect with them in their struggle and really see them.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Perseverance, empathy, vulnerability
