Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Scroggins.
Mario, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Big Moe’s Custom Catering, LLC is a business that began as a hobby, grew into a huge impossible dream and ultimately became a reality. I, Mario J. Scroggins, owner of Big Moe’s Custom Catering, LLC, have a Bachelors and a Masters in Music Education. I am a 14-year educator. Education is a passion of mine in every aspect and Music has been a second language for me from a young age. Though I loved to teach, cooking and hosting others has always been a hobby of mine. I would often cook for family and friends. I would even cook for my students. In 2015, I registered for my D.B.A. and opened a business account and Big Moe’s Custom Catering officially born. For a few years, I was able to manage teaching while also catering small events. As business grew, I questioned if this was sustainable while teaching. The answer was no; thus, a hard choice had to be made and in Spring of 2019, I decided to become a fulltime caterer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Business has not been easy and is often met with various challenges and obstacles. My first challenge would occur in 2020 when the economy shut down and I was no longer able to cater large events. Having just stepped out on faith of leaving the education field, I was truly lost. I attempted to obtain a Food Trailer and use it as a means of sustaining. I even had a contract with the V.A. Hospital. This failed as the covid forced hospitals to cease these types of services. Moreover, I was granted permission to setup location at a furniture with approval from the business owner. That operation was shut down by the city due to an outside business fabricating a narrative about our business. I was truly lost. The good news is that in being lost, great ideas often arise. A friend of mine asked me to conduct a Private Dinner in her home. This was not something I was fond of and was very reluctant, but I did it and it was the start of my Private Dining Experience; an in-home catering experience. From that one dinner, my Private Dining Experience blossomed in spite of the woes of Covid.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting your business is the hardest step. If you have to courage to start the journey, you are already successful.
Struggles will come but always use you “why” as your guide. Keep your “why” as the fuel to keep you going and growing in your business. Lastly, it is your business and no one will love and care for it like you.
