Today we’d like to introduce you to Pam Henry.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my coaching journey right out of college on the east coast in NJ. My love for lacrosse and basketball made it easy to fall into coaching. I have always loved kids and sports so this was right for me. Once moving to Texas in 2009 I realized that the lacrosse community was lacking knowledgable and experienced coaches. I was excited to jump right in and help athletes thrive in the North Texas area. I worked for different programs in the area as well as some travel club teams. It has been such a fun journey meeting different athletes and their families and helping them on their own lacrosse path. The McKinney Lacrosse program has always made me feel like I was “home.” This is my second time working for them as their program director and varsity coach. The board members of volunteers and fellow coaches are kind, giving and loyal. The kids come first and we are all working together to make their experiences a positive one. We have brand new players along with players who are committed to play D1 lacrosse in college. Whatever your level we welcome you and help teach core values to help athletes on and off the field.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Many lacrosse programs in North Texas are run by a board of parents. Having parents of your athletes as your direct boss can ultimately be a conflict of interest and contain biased decisions. On the flip side, it can be a truly positive environment where the board of parents support the coach and want to provide them with whatever they need to be successful. I have seen both of these scenarios over the years in different programs. I am so happy to be with McKinney Lacrosse whose board members support me and my decisions and believe in the same core values and morals that I do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
McKinney Lacrosse
Program Director- In charge of each team from grades kinder to senior grade levels. Work to hire qualified coaches, plan practices, order uniforms, order practice pinnies, ensure coaches are running their teams correctly, set up team parties, etc.
Varsity Coach- run practices, games, work team bonding, teach strategies, implement offenses and defenses that work for our team, etc.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The true teaching begins in practice. The game is where they put what they have learned to use. Building players up does way more for athletes than tearing them down. Mistakes will happen, help them navigate how to play through that part of the game to keep it from messing with the next play.
