Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Bridget Doucette McCray of Mid-Cities

We recently had the chance to connect with Bridget Doucette McCray and have shared our conversation below.

Bridget, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am being called to use my voice to speak up women who feel that they cannot use theirs. I have had periods of time in which I was afraid to use mine for not having enough education or for giving too much credence to what “they” might say.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Bridget Doucette McCray. I am an author, publisher, and inspired graphic designer and the founder of MP31 Creations.

I have been on my own personal journey for more than a decade, which started with my physical health. I have learned that with the challenges life can bring, it is important to be healthy, not just in body, but in spirit and soul, too.

As part of my wellness journey, I have designed & published books I’ve authored, including Pain to Purpose: A Poetry Book, Resilience: Poetry & Songs to Encourage Wellness, and Simple S.A.L.A.D.S.: A Salad Recipe Book with a Twist to encourage women to take better care of themselves by making one wise choice at a time..

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, I love bringing innovative design ideas to life to encourage Black women through practical products we use every day. This is the heart behind MP31 Creations. I create graphic designs that remind each woman, with both words and images, of who she is: loved and valued.

Through my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, I am grateful to be able to use my experience and God-given creativity to be a blessing to other women.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I had to be “perfect.” From my recollection, there was little room for error. I felt like I had to look and act a certain way in order to be loved and accepted. I no longer believe that; however, the residue of that mindset still tries to take center stage every now and then.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I had allowed “perfection” to hold me back to the point of inactivity on more than one occasion. Thoughts of possibly failing were prominent, causing me to be afraid that I’d disappoint anyone who was important to me.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I believe that my closest friends would say that living a life that pleases the Lord really matters to me.

In gratitude for what He has done in my life, by giving the Gift of His Son, Jesus, I want to follow His lead daily, which does not always feel easy to do. I am thankful that I don’t have to walk around with guilt and shame attached like a ball and chain and believe God has called me to encourage other women who may be walking in similar shoes.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What light inside you have you been dimming?
I’ve been dimming my voice. Knowing that there are other powerful women already in the same space led to erroneous thinking. “Why would anyone want to hear from me?” That’s comparison—a trap!

I realize that I am a unique expression of God’s love on this earth, as my late mentor would say.

I can and will use my voice authentically to encourage other women using the gifts and talents the Lord has given me, so they will know that they, too, are loved and valued by Him.
