Today we’d like to introduce you to Nana MIreku.
Hi Nana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a board-certified pediatric allergist with over 15 years of experience, and I’ve had the privilege of caring for thousands of allergic families throughout the DFW area. My passion is helping families overcome seasonal allergies, asthma, eczema, and food allergies so they can live a life of relief.
My journey into allergy medicine is deeply personal. I’ve had seasonal allergies my entire life and understand firsthand how debilitating they can be. Growing up, I dealt with recurrent allergy flares while trying to focus in school, play outdoor sports, and just be a kid. Sneezing attacks during class weren’t occasional inconveniences, this was my life.
It wasn’t until my fourth year of medical school, during an allergy clinical rotation, that I discovered allergy shots. That treatment literally transformed my life by reducing my allergic sensitivity. I was hooked. Right then, I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to helping others experience that same freedom. I completed all of my training: undergraduate studies, medical school, pediatric residency, and allergy/immunology fellowship in Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan.
But my mission took on an entirely new dimension after I became a parent. Both of my children have life-threatening food allergies. Even as an expert pediatric allergist, nothing can truly prepare you for the moment you witness your own child having an anaphylactic reaction. I had to administer multiple doses of epinephrine to save my child’s life. That experience changed everything for me. It transformed my professional calling into a deeply personal mission.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building this practice has certainly not been easy. My biggest challenge has been assembling a world-class team that truly shares our mission: to guide families from fear to freedom, transforming life-threatening food allergies into manageable conditions so that every meal becomes a celebration, not a crisis.
I’m proud to say that our current allergist-led team has been hand-picked. Every member passionately believes in our mission to serve and transform the lives of food allergy families through OIT and food sublingual therapy. Finding people who share that commitment has been worth every challenge along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In 2023, I founded Texas AllergyMD with a clear mission: to transform the lives of patients dealing with allergies, asthma, eczema, and food allergies through immunotherapy treatments. Our goal is simple: It is to help our patients Breathe Well, Itch Less, Eat Safe, and Feel Great!
After caring for thousands of patients, we recently launched Safe2Bite Texas Food Allergy Center as a clinic treating exclusively food allergy patients. I built Safe2Bite to be the food allergy clinic I wish had existed when my own child experienced anaphylaxis.
Food allergy management is not one-size-fits-all. It requires a specialist who understands that food allergies are a multifaceted condition affecting the entire family. Parents and children often struggle with anxiety that needs to be addressed alongside the medical issues. Nutrition guidance is critical, especially for children managing multiple food allergies. This is because families often feel overwhelmed simply figuring out what to feed their kids safely.
Safe2Bite provides end-to-end comprehensive food allergy care: accurate diagnosis, thorough testing, nutritional counseling, behavioral support, and advanced immunotherapy treatments including oral immunotherapy (OIT) and sublingual immunotherapy. These treatments allow our patients to safely consume foods they were once allergic to: one safe bite at a time.
We treat infants, toddlers, school-age children, college students, and adults with allergies to milk, egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, sesame, chickpea, and many other foods.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I remember sitting in class as a child, trying to focus while my eyes watered and I couldn’t stop sneezing. I remember feeling like something was wrong with me—like allergies were just my burden to carry. That memory stays with me every time I meet a child struggling with the same thing. I want them to know there’s hope, there’s treatment, and they don’t have to just “live with it.”
