Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Sullivan.
Kim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my career in education, spending 14 years teaching students from kindergarten through high school. Throughout that time, I discovered that the most meaningful part of my work was the relationships I built with students—particularly at the high school level. Toward the end of my teaching career, I was teaching seniors in mental health and counseling courses, and I quickly realized how impactful simply being a trusted, consistent adult could be. Students often just needed someone to listen, support, and guide them.
About ten years after earning my undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University, I felt called to deepen that work and returned to school to pursue a degree in school counseling. I completed my internship on my own campus, where I fell in love with counseling and the ability to support students in a more intentional way. However, I also recognized the limitations of the school setting and wanted the freedom to serve clients without constraints.
That realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in clinical counseling, become a Licensed Professional Counselor, and ultimately transition out of the school system. Today, I run my own private practice and work contractually as a special education counselor across all grade levels, which allows me to serve clients of all ages and continue my greatest passion: helping people feel seen, supported, and empowered.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I returned to graduate school to earn my master’s degree, I found out I was pregnant. I completed my coursework and internship while pregnant and later with a newborn, all while working full time and raising two other children at home. Balancing school, work, and family required resilience, flexibility, and a strong support system.
After completing my degree, I faced a new challenge leaving the stability of a 14-year career in education to start my own private practice. Stepping away from a secure, familiar path to build a business from the ground up was both daunting and stressful. It required taking significant risks, learning an entirely new skill set, and trusting myself during a season of uncertainty.
While the journey has been challenging, those experiences have shaped my perspective, strengthened my determination, and deepened my empathy for the clients I serve today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Yet Counseling is a private counseling practice built on the belief that growth, healing, and change are always possible, even when it doesn’t feel that way yet. We serve children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, offering a supportive and relational approach to therapy that meets clients exactly where they are.
Our practice specializes in child and adolescent therapy, play therapy, family counseling, and support for teens and young adults navigating anxiety, self-esteem, life transitions, and relational challenges. With a strong foundation in education and school counseling, Yet Counseling is especially known for its work with school-aged children, teens, and families who are seeking practical tools alongside emotional support.
My background as a teacher for 14 years has played a significant role in shaping both my approach to counseling and the brand of Yet Counseling. Working in the education world allowed me to deeply understand children, adolescents, families, and school systems, and it has helped me build a practice that feels approachable, relatable, and grounded in real-life experience. That background enables me to support clients in ways that are practical, developmentally appropriate, and collaborative.
Additionally, being fluent in Spanish has been a meaningful and impactful part of my work. It allows me to better serve Spanish-speaking clients and families, reduce barriers to care, and create a space where clients can express themselves fully in the language they are most comfortable using.
What sets Yet Counseling apart is our emphasis on connection, authenticity, and individualized care. Therapy here is designed to feel safe, welcoming, and judgment-free, not clinical or intimidating. Sessions are tailored to each client’s unique needs, with a strong focus on relationship-building, trust, and empowerment.
I am most proud of the warm, supportive environment we’ve created and the reputation Yet Counseling has built as a place of hope and encouragement. Above all, I want readers to know that Yet Counseling exists to remind people that while they may not be where they want to be right now, growth and healing are always possible—YET.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in Cypress, a suburb just outside of Houston, Texas. Spanish was actually my first language, I didn’t begin speaking English until I started kindergarten at age five. My parents were intentional about raising me bilingual, and I’m incredibly grateful for that foundation, as it has shaped both who I am and how I connect with others today.
As the youngest child, I was very much the “baby” of the family—playful, energetic, and a bit carefree. Sports played a huge role in my life growing up; I played soccer and basketball for most of my childhood and teenage years. I was even offered the opportunity to play at a couple of different colleges, but ultimately decided to take a different path.
Even now, staying active remains an important part of who I am, whether through running or recreational sports. Looking back, I think my love for connection, movement, and community showed up early—and those same qualities continue to influence both my personal life and the way I approach my work today.
