Life & Work with Susan Brewer of Hugo, Oklahoma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Brewer.

Hi Susan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started building Buffalo Trails Cabins in 2020 and we opened in March of 2021. It is a unique vacation destination . My 8 old west style cabins are all unique. You can stay in Marshall Dillon’s jail( complete with bunks ,inside the cell. My stables each contain stalls. The saloons each have a small bar and table. Miss Kitty’s bath house has a swinging bed as well as a red claw footed tub. All eight cabins have bathrooms and large showers as well as heat and air..
My petting zoo sits across from the cabins. Miniature donkeys (Belle and Starr), Marshall Dillion (miniature cow), Bingo,(spotted pony), as well as Miss Kitty, Chester, Festus, Doc, and Miss Scarlet are all ready to come to the fence and visit with you.
My large pavilion allows guests to kick back around tables and grill or play cornhole. It also is a great place for a wedding reception or birthday party celebration. Directly behind the pavilion is a hitching post for those inclined to tie the knot.
Children and adults enjoy our sluice mining for arrowheads.
We are located on 109 acres just outside the city limits. We are 1 mile from the elephants, 5 miles from Hugo Lake, 5 miles from the Grant Casino, and 2 miles from historic Mt. Olivet cemetery.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Opening during the pandemic was difficult. People were hesitant get out and about.
Developing my website, policies such as being pet friendly, and credit card capabilities took some effort for a retired librarian and teacher.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a retired teacher and school librarian of 30 years. I taught twirling lessons to over 45 young ladies, then was flag and majorette’s sponsor for a number of years.
I coached two OM teams in Hugo that won state and then competed in world competition. That was very satisfying to see the creativity that those students developed.

How do you define success?
I define success as being proud of what you are doing. Being a role model, friend and inspiration to others to improve their lives is very important to me.
