Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Ho.
Mason, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Yume Foods is a joint effort between 2 chefs trying to make a name for themselves in the growing Dallas foodscene. Ikki Wu and I(Mason Ho) started our catering company about a year ago, doing private events, weddings, and whatever small pop-ups we could get booked while both working full time jobs. Fast forward to now, and we are currently undergoing a transition to opening our first restaurant. Built from scratch and designed by us from the ground up, “BITE – Sushi & Tapas” looks to bring a new creative spark to the dallas foodie scene and Oak Cliff. The restaurant’s main focuses will be to bring top quality Sushi and fun shareable bites in the form of an a la carte menu and a curated flight menu, while maintaining reasonable prices and removing the haute culture that surrounds dallas Sushi. We believe that Sushi doesn’t need to come with an exorbitant price tag, nor does it require you to dress up and drop hundreds of dollars to still be hungry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to where we are now has definitely not been smooth. Between moving in together to save money, juggling fulltime jobs, familial responsibilities, and making decisions on the direction of the business, we’ve definitely been at each other’s throats just to try and make things work. We have to remind ourselves that we don’t hate the people involved, we are just frustrated with the problems we are facing, such as increasing market prices, and our lack of knowledge in starting a business, since this is our first go around.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We both have been chefs for over 10 years each with Ikki being primarily focused in sushi, and myself being somewhat of an all-rounder doing everything baking desserts to managing full service AYCE buffets. The combined experience we both bring to the table has definitely been eye opening for both of us, taking the knowledge that we have and trying to use it together to try and solve whatever issues arise.
How do you think about luck?
Luck is an interesting concept, I’d say that most of it comes down to just pushing through when the chips are down and chasing after the opportunities in front of you. The opportunity is there, the lucky part is just being able to have the ability to follow up when it passes by.
