Check Out Keithsha Mitchell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keithsha Mitchell.

Hi Keithsha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After providing more than 15 years of services to a comprehensive group of ages in both behavioral health and social services programs I realized I wanted to create a greater impact on the lives of others. I started teaching individuals about mindfulness through journal writing and meditation. When I noticed improved mental clarity in individuals who participated in yoga and meditation sessions, I embarked on a journey to become a yoga instructor. Which then led into Grow Into Change. A wellness program that combines education through speaking engagements, sound baths, yoga workshops, meditation, and guided journals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This in fact has not been a smooth road. The first year I secured 10 contracts, and was eager and motivated. Into month 9 one of my contracts reduced classes from 4 times a week down to 1. I was not prepared for that shift. However, it grew me to make greater connections. I’m grateful for that experience within the first year because it propelled me to strengthen my abilities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in behavioral health and I believe that sets my yoga teachings apart from others. Often times I hear people speak of the physical aspects of yoga which we call asanas. But teach people that yoga is more that the poses. Having started out with the intent to address mental health needs, I teach clients to rest more than I focus on their flexibility. As a behavioral health specialist and supervisor I also have additional training and certification in trauma informed yoga, along with yoga nidra, and yoga for anxiety. Therefore whenever I teach a yoga class the intent is for improved mental clarity resulting in greater awareness for the individual. Also, I love hearing people snore at the end of a class, it makes me think “wow they really needed yoga, I’m happy they prioritized self care and showed up for class today.”

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That yoga helped me to process the loss of my older brother when I was a sophomore in college. Before I even understood the benefits it helped to heal a very difficult process in my life. So, I hold space in all of my classes because you never know why someone is showing up, but I know we all have a story. Having practiced yoga for 18 years makes me believe that we all need yoga.
