Exploring Life & Business with Chance Demases of Demases Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chance Demases.

Hi Chance, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our farm was started in 1919 in Fort Worth, TX and has operated contnuously ever since. We were in Arlington from 1941-1987 and have been in Boyd since 1987. I have worked on the farm full-time for the last 10 years or so.

The farm operates 100 acres and we sell the fruits and vegetables we grow at our farm store and to restaurants across DFW. We also offer pick your own strawberries in the Spring.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Farming in general is one of the most challenging professions you can be in. Not only are you dealing with the weather and other production issues, but over the last 20 years or so the government has made it harder for small farms to be able to sell wholesale. Fortunately for us, we have been able to establish a more retail driven business and have caught a few breaks along the way. We were fortunate enough to be involved with Tarrant Area Food Bank through the Local Food Purchase Assistance program in 2023, for example.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Demases Farm?
Our farm is one of the oldest continually operated farms in North Texas, and quite possibly the oldest when it comes t fruits and vegetables. We have a history of growing produce in the Trinity River bottoms of North Texas that dates back to 1919. Historically we grew wholesale for larger grocery stores in the area, but over the last 15 years or so have transitioned to more of a retail model that includes on farm sales, pick your own strawberries and direct sales to restaurants.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Our city is well positioned from a customer base standpoint due to the growth in the North Fort Worth area. This growth also comes with it’s challenges from increasing traffic to higher prices for farmland.

Pricing:

  • Pricing for our fruits and vegetables available at our farm stand varies by product and availability varies by season.
  • Pricing for restaurants and chefs located in DFW is available upon request.
  • Pick Your Own Strawberries currently are $8/lb plus $5 for buckets to pick in.
