Today we’d like to introduce you to Jawan Johnson.
Hi Jawan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Wilmington, Delaware. It’s a small city with a lot of heart, but growing up there, the path to major opportunities wasn’t always obvious. Even then, I knew I wanted more — not just for myself, but so I could eventually create opportunities for others.
On 9/11/2016, I moved to Miami with only my clothes and a few bucks.
Two months before that move, I woke up one morning with a clear feeling that I needed a bigger environment. I called my cousin Shahini and asked her if it would be okay for me to come down to Miami. Without hesitation, she said, “Absolutely.” No questions. No doubt. Just belief.
So I packed what I could — which wasn’t much — and bet on myself.
Living in Miami transformed me. I was surrounded by people from different countries, cultures, languages, and economic backgrounds. I built relationships with people whose life experiences were completely different from mine. I learned how to adapt quickly, how to communicate across cultures, and how to connect with people beyond surface-level differences. I began to understand that while backgrounds may differ, people share the same core desires — stability, opportunity, and belonging.
The transition wasn’t something I navigated alone. My Aunt Gloria and Uncle Paul helped make the move comfortable and stable. They made Miami feel like home. My mother, my brother Stefon, my brother-in-law Hakeem, my sister Lauren, my Aunt Jennifer, and my cousins Shahini, Melody, and Alesia — along with many others in my family — poured love, guidance, and accountability into me. Their support is a major reason I stand where I do today.
Eventually, I felt another pull — this time toward Texas.
I moved to Texas to pursue real estate, something that was already in my blood. My family had long been connected to the industry, and stepping into it felt natural. I’ve always been driven by problem-solving and helping people navigate complex situations. Real estate became the intersection of purpose and skill.
I arrived in March 2020 — the same month COVID was declared a global pandemic.
The world shut down. Jobs disappeared. Businesses closed. Families struggled to make rent. I was trying to establish myself in a brand-new state during one of the most uncertain economic periods in modern history. At the same time, my family experienced a devastating personal loss that shook us deeply. It was a heartbreaking season that changed all of us.
That period tested everything — my faith, my patience, my resilience.
But it also deepened my empathy. It gave me a real understanding of transition, uncertainty, and rebuilding. Today, when I help someone secure housing or navigate a difficult situation, it’s never just transactional. I understand what it means to bet on yourself with very little. I understand what it means to start over from scratch.
Wilmington gave me hunger.
Miami taught me courage.
My family gave me foundation.
Texas gave me opportunity.
And every challenge along the way refined me.
Long Live Hakeem Bishop.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This road has definitely not been smooth. There have been many obstacles and hurdles along the way. At one point, I was struggling to find a home that would accept me. I was living with a friend while working on my Texas Real Estate License. I managed to complete it in just three months, passing my national exam on the first try and my state exam on the second.
Around the same time, interest rates were rising rapidly, which slowed down the housing market. I realized I needed a strategy that would allow me to serve more people and grow my business faster. That’s when I became an apartment locator. With more people renting due to high interest rates, I was able to generate more leads and work through a faster sales cycle.
Every challenge taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding creative solutions, which are the same lessons I bring to helping my clients today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in helping renters get approved by guiding them through the entire rental process. I work closely with each client to review their situation, identify any obstacles, create a plan to improve their approval chances, and connect them with the right properties. My goal is to make what can feel like a stressful and complicated process straightforward, manageable, and empowering.
What sets me apart is that I’ve been through these same challenges myself. I’ve faced credit issues, denials, and uncertainty when trying to find a home, so I truly understand what my clients are going through. I don’t just provide options, I provide a clear road map, personalized guidance, and advocacy every step of the way.
What I’m most proud of is turning my own struggles into a resource for others. Helping someone secure their home and see a path forward, especially when they thought it might not be possible, is incredibly rewarding.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something most people don’t know about me is that I’m related to the late great Bob Marley. I’m Jamaican on my mother’s side, and my grandmother helped Bob Marley and his mother immigrate to the United States. Music has always been a big part of my life, and to this day, I attend his kids’ concerts and even hang out backstage with them on their tour bus and it’s always good vibes. That connection reminds me of the importance of legacy, perseverance, and creating positive experiences for others, which is something I bring into my work every day.
