Today we’d like to introduce you to Phyllis Song.
Hi Phyllis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story started long before my first business.
I grew up watching my mom work incredibly hard just to keep things together. Effort and responsibility were normal, but there was very little margin for error. I learned early that survival meant carrying weight quietly, and I carried that belief into adulthood.
I sold Bibles door to door when I was 22, learning sales and self-reliance. I moved into real estate, then the alarm system industry. On paper, it was progress. I was building, producing, and doing everything “right.”
Yet beneath the surface, I realized I was becoming the very system I once watched from afar.
The business worked, my calendar was full, and nothing broke, yet it felt heavy. I didn’t want to repeat my childhood, nor did I want my children to equate success with stress and absence.
The shift came when I saw delegation and global talent as a partnership, not just help. When my husband suffered a spinal injury, that choice was tested. I stepped away to be present with him, and for the first time, the business ran without me. That redefined success.
As people asked how my business could grow without burning me out, I started Dream Virtual Team Agency to help entrepreneurs build teams and systems that support both growth and life.
The road wasn’t smooth. I had to unlearn my guilt around ease and the idea that struggle equals success. Now, everything I build is rooted in one truth: you can’t scale a life if it relies on you never stepping away.
I didn’t lose my way. I outgrew it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road.
One of my biggest struggles was realizing I could build a business that worked and still feel trapped inside it. On the outside, things looked fine. Inside, I felt heavy. I was moving fast, solving problems, and carrying everything, yet feeling smaller instead of freer.
I grew up watching my mom work hard just to get by, and without realizing it, I brought that survival mindset into my business. Rest felt unsafe. Delegation felt risky. I believed my value came from how much I could personally carry.
That belief was tested when my husband suffered a serious spine injury. I had to step away and be fully present, and it forced me to confront a hard truth that building a life where everything depends on you is fragile.
As the business grew, so did my fear of letting go, fear of being seen, and guilt for wanting ease. Growth didn’t fix those things; it exposed them.
The hardest part wasn’t the work, but it was letting go of the belief that struggle was the price of success. That lesson changed how I build, lead, and live today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dream Virtual Team Agency?
The name of my business is Dream Virtual Team Agency.
Most of the people we work with don’t feel like they’re struggling, at least not in an obvious way. Their businesses are running. Revenue is coming in. Clients are happy. But underneath that, there’s a constant mental load they can’t seem to put down. Every decision runs through them. Every problem eventually lands on their desk. Even with a team, they’re still the ones holding everything together.
They’re not burned out because they’re weak. They’re burned out because they’re necessary.
What I’ve found is that many founders don’t realize they’ve become the bottleneck until life forces them to step away, or until the business starts costing them more than they expected, like their energy, their presence, their ability to be fully available at home.
Dream Virtual Team Agency helps founders build their teams and systems that don’t just “support” them, but actually replace the need for them to be everywhere. We specialize in creating clarity, clear roles, clear communication, and clear ownership, so the business can move forward without constant checking, fixing, or micromanaging.
What sets us apart is that we don’t assume delegation is easy. We understand how hard it is to let go when you’ve been the responsible one for so long. That’s why our work isn’t just operational, it’s deeply human. We help founders shift out of survival mode and into leadership, where trust replaces control.
If there’s one thing I want readers to know, it’s this: if your business works but your life feels tight, you’re not broken, and you’re not alone. You don’t need to push harder. You need the right structure and the right people so the business can finally support you, not depend on you.
That’s why Dream Virtual Team Agency exists.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite memories is sitting on the floor with my family, sharing simple meals, laughter, and heartfelt conversations.
We didn’t have much. But in those moments, I felt something much more important: I felt safe, seen, and like I belonged.
I remember the warmth of being together, the sound of our conversations, and the feeling that even with little, we had enough. The true benefit was the strong sense of connection; it made everything feel right.
As a child, I learned something quietly, but clearly that love isn’t about how much you have. It’s about how present you are.
Those moments have stayed with me.
They shaped how I see success, leadership, and fulfillment today. They’re why family, freedom, and people matter so much to me. They’re also why I’ve always believed work should support life, not take its place.
Everything I’ve built, such as my company, our culture, and my approach to leadership, comes from wanting to bring back that feeling of connection, security, and shared joy. I want this not just for my family, but also for my team and the founders we support.
In the end, that sense of togetherness is still what I’m working toward.
