Meet Sandra Deanda of Denison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Deanda.

Hi Sandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been interested in art since I was young. At 13 I discovered the artwork of Frida Kahlo and that inspired me to start painting. When I went to college I started working on a graphic design degree but soon I fell in love with my studio art classes. I graduated with my Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2012 and I have been working as a professional artist since then in the Texoma area.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been easy in my journey as an artist. To be an artist in a world that always undermines the value of art can be extremely difficult at times. Fighting insecurities as an artist has been a challenge. It is very easy to get lost in social media and playing the comparison game and in that game you will always lose. I had to learn to be proud of my art and understand that my art will always be evolving.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a traditional and digital artist. I mainly create paintings and drawings. My art is known for being a mix of colorful, cutesy imagery and also a more thought provoking dark side. My art is influenced by my colorful Mexican heritage,my experiences as a bi woman, the nostalgia of growing up in the early 2000s and my love of horror & fantasy. I am most proud of how far I have come into my artist journey. Not just becoming technically better but also being more comfortable with the fact that my style is a mix of visuals that might not look as uniform as what is usually expected of artists. My art style unapologetically represents who I am and what I enjoy.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me the most is spreading the message of being creative. I am a big believer in the therapeutic power of art and creating. I always hope that people who view my art are inspired to create in any form they enjoy the most. To write that song, sew that shirt, recite that monologue. All forms of expression in my mind are necessary to live a truly happy life. I cannot stress enough that in the creative journey it is okay to make “bad”, “ugly” art. Don’t be afraid to use fancy supplies. Just make it exist. It can be made good later.
