Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenine Therese Catalan-Referente.
Jenine Therese, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I wanted to become a lawyer, following in my dad’s footsteps, but God had a different plan for me. I graduated in the Philippines in 2012 with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and moved to Texas in 2014 to begin my nursing career.
I spent nearly seven years at Baylor University Medical Center working as a cardiothoracic and transplant nurse while simultaneously pursuing my Master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Throughout that time, I have always had a deep love for beauty and skincare. Ever since high school, taking care of my skin and being in the beauty space came naturally to me, even though I never imagined myself becoming an injector.
As my career evolved as a Nurse Practitioner, I felt called to blend my clinical background with my passion for aesthetics. I invested heavily in my education, paid for my own training, and worked with other medspas to continue learning. Patient safety has always been my top priority. I am not a risk taker, so I made sure I was truly prepared clinically, ethically, and emotionally before opening my own space.
There are still many moments when I’m not sure I’m ready, but I take a leap of faith, trust God’s timing, and lean on years of prayer, hard work, and the unwavering support of my friends and family. Today, I can confidently say that I am living the dream God placed in my heart, loving life with my husband and our two beautiful children.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road. One of my biggest struggles has been imposter syndrome. For a long time, I felt like I wasn’t good enough or skilled enough, even though I had the training and experience. That doubt was very real and something I had to work through. Even now, imposter syndrome still shows up at times, but I’ve learned to stay positive and not let it consume me.
I also wrestled with the comfort of stability. I worked in primary care and other medspas, but deep down I knew that staying comfortable would limit my growth. Stepping outside of that comfort zone was scary, and it took years for me to fully trust myself and take that step forward.
Looking back, those struggles shaped me. They pushed me to grow, build confidence, and move with intention rather than fear.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Isla Skin and Wellness was created with the intention of offering results-driven, medically sound aesthetic care without losing the personal, human connection. At its core, Isla is where science, beauty, and wellness come together in a thoughtful and ethical way.
What we do goes beyond cosmetic treatments. I specialize in medical aesthetics, skin rejuvenation, and wellness-based services that focus on enhancing natural beauty rather than changing how someone looks. My approach is conservative and individualized. Every treatment plan is customized, and patient education and safety are always prioritized. I take the time to listen, assess, and guide patients toward treatments that make sense for them, not trends.
What truly sets Isla apart is the strong medical foundation and intentional approach. Coming from years of experience in acute care, primary care, and advanced nursing practice, safety and integrity guide every decision we make. I believe in doing things the right way, even when it takes longer. There is no rushing, no over-treating, and no pressure. My patients trust us because we are honest, meticulous, and focused on long-term skin health and overall well-being.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of the trust I’ve built. Isla has become a space where patients feel seen, heard, and cared for. Many come to me not just for treatments, but because they value my philosophy of natural, balanced results and ethical practice. I also place a strong emphasis on continuous education, staying current with evidence-based techniques, and maintaining high clinical standards.
What I want readers to know is that Isla Skin and Wellness is more than a medspa. It’s a purpose-driven practice rooted in faith, preparation, and service. Every offering, from skincare treatments to aesthetic and wellness services, is delivered with intention, compassion, and respect for the individual. My goal is to help patients feel confident, refreshed, and supported, inside and out.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
At the heart of Isla Skin and Wellness is a belief that our work should serve, not pressure. This practice was built through prayer, preparation, and a deep respect for the responsibility that comes with caring for others. Every patient encounter is an opportunity to lead with integrity, compassion, and excellence. I don’t take that lightly, and I’m grateful for the trust my patients place in me.
