Daily Inspiration: Meet Brian Farley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Farley.

Hi Brian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was a custom home builder for the majority of my life. I started as a laborer, and worked my way up through the process of becoming a General Contractor. I specialize in high end homes and work directly with the clients. Working with clients for other building developers showed me that they don’t care for the clients. It’s just another build, and making them money. I had enough of that experience and decided to take on less projects and be personally involved to make the experience much better for the client. I don’t want to have projects that I don’t care for or am not personally attached to.
Definitely understand that I’ll make much less money with this approach, but I have my dignity. It took me awhile to start my own business with this approach, but it’s worked out just fine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The main struggle was losing bids to unlicensed contractors. This is still a major issue. Of course they can do it for less, but it is illegal! They are not qualified, are not insured, bonded, and all of the other things that is professionals have to pay. California is not cheap to run a legitimate business in and it takes dedication to do it right. I believe that it is easier to not do these things but if you are caught….it makes the rest of us furious. I guess that’s the nature of the beast, and why I sympathize with homeowners that just want to build something with not worrying about these types of things.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Like I stated before, I am hands on and a great communicator. I am likely to become a friend by the end of it all. I meet people in the middle, explain the options, and constantly check in. It is a stressful process to do these things and I find that most people don’t acknowledge this. I refuse to let a client complete business with me unsatisfied. It doesn’t get much more personal than being allowed to build or upgrade your home!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that the cities are constantly upgrading. Without this, us contractors wouldn’t exist. I love that they are excited about the project. I love that there are so many different types of style and taste out there that every project I learn something new.
A strong dislike is the traffic. But who likes that! Ha!
