Conversations with Kevin Scarbrough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Scarbrough.

Hi Kevin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing music when I was five years old. It’s always been a part of who I am. Over the years, I learned drums, keys, bass, and guitar. I’ve gone through pretty much every phase you can imagine. I’ve recorded, played live shows, and even produced full albums where I handled every instrument, every vocal, and even the mixing and mastering myself.
Music has been the one constant in my life.
About five years ago, I realized I wanted to build something that combined that lifelong passion with something practical and sustainable. Since guitar and bass have always been my favorite instruments, I started focusing on repair, setup, and eventually building. What began as a side hustle – helping my friends and local players – quickly grew into something much bigger.
Now it’s not just a business. It’s my craft. I get to serve musicians. I get to help people fall in love with their instruments all over again. What started as a passion project turned into something that could become a full-time career, and that’s incredibly exciting.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a small business while still working a full-time job and being a dad to four kids has definitely been the biggest challenge. Time is definitely the constant battle. I have no extra hours sitting around waiting to be used. So for me, it’s been choosing the early morning hours before everyone wakes up and late nights when everyone is getting ready for bed. There are alot of long days stacked on top of each other.
There’s also an internal side of it all. As I’m building something from the ground up, it’s easy to compare yourself to people who have done it longer than you, or seem further ahead. It’s a bit of imposter syndrome playing out. There are those moments where you wonder if you’re spinning your wheels or if you’re really as good as you need to be.
But I push through those moments, and I come out a little more confident. I’ve learned that growth isn’t flashy. It’s consistent. It’s discipline – showing up when you’re exhausted. Every day, I get to choose whether I want to refine my craft or not. And it’s remembering why I started this in the first place.
It has definitely not been smooth, but it’s been worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets me apart, especially in a market as large and competitive as the DFW Metroplex, is that I’m not a large retail operation or a corporate repair counter. I’m a musician who genuinely loves guitars, basses, stringed instruments, and the craft behind them.
When someone brings an instrument to my garage, it’s not just another ticket number. I understand that it is personal. I know that instrument represents time, money, creativity, and sometimes even memories. I treat every instrument with the same care and respect I’d give my own.
I’m passionate about making sure customers walk away not just with a better-playing instrument, but it’s an opportunity to reignite excitement for playing music. I value honesty, clear communication, and doing the job right, even when it takes extra time. Integrity definitely matters to me, both in how I treat people and how I approach the work.
At the end of the day, I’m someone who deeply loves music and wants to serve other musicians well. That’s what drives everything I do.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My brother and I received two different gifts – a guitar for my brother, and a bike for me. I found myself more fascinated with the guitar than my brother was, so we agreed to trade the gifts. I learned my first songs and riffs on that guitar. But, I still rode the bike more than my brother. So, it was a win-win!
