Conversations with Bri McKay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bri McKay.

Hi Bri, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been a creative entrepreneur for years specializing in music/songwriting/singing and acting/film and theatre. I could name all the skill sets but I’m afraid you’d get bored before we even get started 😅

The cliff notes of my story: it starts with me as a baby, singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to becoming a kid with a passion for the performing arts in all its forms: singing, dance and acting. Then, to becoming a teenager with dreams and deep feelings that needed a healthy outlet (where songwriting came in), to becoming an adult and refusing to quit on my dream or purpose because the field is saturated or it gets hard.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has its twists, turns, and challenges just like any career or dream, but it hasn’t been difficult enough for me to quit. I dare say it never will be. The obstacles don’t seem so large or intimidating when it’s something you love.
The struggles are mainly against myself: stopping procrastination, letting fear of not being good enough stop me from releasing a song or auditioning for a role, learning how to take the plethora of “no’s”before getting to a”yes.” All of these things COULD have taken me out, but I’m a fighter so I just stayed with it. Self belief is a powerful tool to keep at it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well I guess now would be an appropriate time to write down that list I mentioned at the beginning lol!
I’m known as a singer-songwriter, recording artist, and actress. I am represented by The Boysen Agency, and am on the East London Recordings Artist roster. I’m also very proud to have my own hour of music playing on Coastal Breeze Radio from 11am-12noon every Wednesday and Saturday.
Lesser known roles I’ve taken on in the entertainment industry include: print modeling, directing, filmography, editing, PA, producing, dancing/choreographing, as well as sound design, sound op and stage managing in theatre.
Lastly, I’m also a creative writer. Not only do I write lyrics but I have a non fiction e-book titled “The Grey World: Understanding Bipolar Disorder.” I’m a huge mental health advocate on top of everything else I use my platform for.
I don’t think I could choose one thing to be most proud of. I’m proud of all that I’ve accomplished in my career and the different opportunities to learn and grow that I’ve been given. I’m looking forward to what’s next!

What matters most to you?
The artistry and telling stories in whatever platform or media I can. The world needs more empathy and understanding, and cinema, theatre, and music are all excellent ways to tell the truth; to tell the stories and perspectives that should not be silenced and reach people where it matters: their hearts and minds.
