Life & Work with Justin Feemster of East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Feemster.

Hi Justin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is McFeemy the clown, I am an East Dallas local artist and curator of all things weird, strange and odd. I have spent a lot of years working alongside the owner of Curiosities, Jason Cohen, to find and restore the coolest antiques and oddities from all over the world, just for other people to enjoy. Along with being a clown, I am also a husband and father, and our little family provides entertainment/parties that have become known as McFeemy’s FACE your FEARS. We have hosted anything from a 5 year old’s bug and reptile fueled educational party, up to spooky adult parties that really pushed the boundaries of fear. We even held an event with the nonprofit The Science Place Foundation, in which they debuted a reclaimed collection of original exhibits from the now extinct Fair park Science place where they performed their famous electric theater light show in a now abandoned 1930s funeral home.

Fear itself is either taught or of the unknown, so we utilize many creepy crawly creatures, possibly haunted items and spooky sensory overload to help you to overcome your fears. Many people become returning customers, even after being blindfolded and sat in a 150 year old lobotomy chair and taught about entomophagy (the practice of eating bugs) with deliciously prepared hors d’oeuvres or desserts.

We also breed isopods and exotic roaches, for pets! We are very involved in the animal rescue and welfare world and vend at several expos that travel the country, educating people on the different roles that bugs play in the world. We also provide preservations for pet owners, including wet specimens and skeletal articulations.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have definitely met a lot of curves along the way with us being self taught and never doing the same thing twice! The biggest struggle in the beginning was finding our spot in all of the different communities that we are now so renowned in. Being such innovators in the services we provide, we were met with a lot of judgmental looks at first, but quickly became the talk of any room we were in or event we attended.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We sell oddities, art, skeletal articulations and wet specimens. We provide entertainment at birthday parties or events. We breed and sale isopods, exotic roaches and oddball pets.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
What we do is uncommon and taboo and can make a lot of people uncomfortable, so essentially we take a risk every time we present ourselves to the public. Our mission is to expose or challenge people to things that they woudn’t encounter in their every day life. In doing this it empowers the person to overcome whatever mental block they may have and most people walk away learning many new things.
