Life & Work with Cliff Nichols of North Texas (Dallas)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cliff Nichols.

Hi Cliff, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are a Father and Son team small business that has operated mainly in North Texas for a number of decades. I learned master craftsmanship from my father, who years ago worked with Boudestory Tile and Staubach (Rogers Dad) & Gavin (Senator) Construction, both companies are out of Dallas. Some projects he completed were the Texas State Capital, Washington DC capital Repairs, and Sam Rayburn Library. We are well known for our specialty in Kitchens and Bathrooms. My son and I do all the construction with natural stone, hardwoods, and integrity. We love challenges in granite, marble, quartz, carpentry, cabinetry and mostly special requests. We’re capable of anything customized that you have in mind from modern to ancient. We are available to give a free estimate on your thoughts and ideas.

Some extreme jobs we have completed are: 52 color glass mosaics in showers and entries, 42 foot free standing fireplace (Graham), weaving wood and stone into floors, hand carved and inlaid contoured tables (Austin), 1200 year old Ancient castle work moved from Ireland and recreated in a master bath in (Denton), 400 year old sailing ships captains bar into an entrance lavatory (Graham), 600 year old armoire converted to a wet bar (N. Dallas).

You can find us through the website or on Google Maps. Give us a call or we’ll get back to you promptly. Examples of our work can be found at https://www.customkitandbath.com/

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Usually, with good communication and planning with the owner/designer/architect along with coordination with other trades our jobs run pretty smooth. There are times when the only smooth part of this adventure was the finished project! Some of the struggles along the way were maintaining integrity to complete jobs on time and underbudget. We have worked 36 hours straight to complete a job on time and have driven crews in custom buses to allow them to sleep to and from the job sites.
Again, these are the extremes. Sometimes job expectations change and we have to adjust. We do what is needed to accommodate change.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are General Contractors that work out of North Texas. We are known for our specialty in Kitchens and Master Bathrooms with modern and ancient motifs. I am cautious about pride. I try not to let me get a big head. I enjoy and love all the projects from $1.2 M to $10K. Mainly, I love the people. Owners, Designers, Architects, and especially our crew. The expectations are high and we don’t shy away from the challenges and requirements for the projects. Our crew is extremely talented. We have the ability to complete any skill or trade that is needed for the job. We actually, just love hanging out with cool craftsmen. It is sort of a comradery. Each job is a new adventure and so much fun.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I take risks and believe that without them there is little gain. I do use caution and calculation to estimate the success when extreme risks exist. Most people think of risk as financial. I think if it is financial there is not that much risk involved. Risk to me, is the ability to succeed. I never ask any of my crew to do something that I would not, To some of them, that scares them. I like to be prepared for any risk I take or ask of someone else. I prepare and support safety always although there are times when it is necessary to exceed the general safety concerns to accomplish the task. I am speaking mainly of physical risks like building a 42 foot free standing fireplace or moving slabs into a multistory building with a crane, or simply walking top plate on a 3 story.
