Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Abi Mitchell.
Hi Dr. Abi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always wanted to be a doctor but when I was in 9th grade a had a bad snowboarding fall. I broke my neck in the fall and after 14 hours in multiple hospitals, I was finally given the diagnosis. Over the next few weeks my life adjusted but I was having some major symptoms. I began seeing a neurologist and after many tests, they stated the only thing they could do for me was a fusion surgery of my upper neck. Being a young teen I wasn’t convinced that this was the only solution. I had seen a chiropractor in the past for other growing aches and pains, and my mom decided to bring me to see her to see if there’s anything else that could be done. She was amazing and after a few short weeks I started to see those symptoms disappear. I knew then that I wanted to become a chiropractor to help those that had been told there was no other solution.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Chiropractic school was one of the hardest, most challenging times in my life. It is a very intensive schooling completed in under 4 years. We were in classes daily from 7am until 5pm and some classes went until 8pm. Then add on top the studying for test, national board exams (I did both Canadian and Americans so 8 in total), and trying to balance a life… it was very intense.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My husband and I are both co-owners and chiropractors at Prime Spine and Wellness. We have worked hard to make our office feel less like a doctors office and more like a comfortable place. We have amazing staff that treat every patient as an individual, we get to know them and a little about their life. We work with families, kids, adults, anyone who is looking to improve their health or get back to their life pain free. We love working with individuals who have been in car accidents and my husband (an Army Veteran) also loves having other veterans in the office.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband- the amazing Dr Mac- is the yang to my yin. He is my full supporter in life and business and over all the years together he’s been nothing but my biggest cheerleader.
