Rising Stars: Meet Sydney Davis of Plano, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Davis.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After high school, I headed to college because that’s just what you’re ‘supposed’ to do. It was a struggle. I bounced between schools, trying to find my way, and then life really hit—I had my daughter right in the middle of a semester. Suddenly, I was a single mom, navigating my newfound motherhood, balancing classes with overnight shifts at Amazon, and towing a baby around on random gigs. The stress eventually took a physical toll on me, and I realized I was chasing a version of success that wasn’t mine. I had to pivot.

A family member had always nudged me toward cosmetology, but I used to brush it off, thinking it wasn’t a ‘serious’ enough career. With no other options or any ideas on what to do, I just went for it, and it was the best decision I ever made. In that one year of cosmetology school, I found more than just a craft; I found a lane where the possibilities felt endless.

I didn’t take the traditional route after graduating, either. Finding a salon that checked off the right boxes for me as a new stylist was challenging, but I wasn’t about to sit around and wait. I started taking house calls just to keep my hands moving, and then I realized something: people actually love the convenience of in-home service. There’s this stereotype that having a personal stylist come to you is only for the ‘rich,’ but I’m out here proving otherwise. I’m making luxury hair care accessible for everyone, right in their own living rooms.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest hurdle after graduation was realizing there was no gentle push into this career. As a Black stylist, I looked around for apprenticeship programs where I could actually assist and learn the ropes, but those opportunities just didn’t seem to exist for us the way they do at White salons. Most of the industry here is built on the salon suite model, which makes it nearly impossible to start when you don’t have the bankroll or a built-in clientele to cover a monthly lease.

Without a hands-on mentor to guide me every day, it’s been a ‘learn as you go’ experience. I’m figuring out the business side and working to expand my knowledge all at the same time. To help maintain life, I still work a flex job. To add to that, we’re in the age of social media where you’re expected to be a full-time content creator just to thrive. I’ve never been an ‘in front of the camera’ person or someone who wants to capture every single moment. I’ve even had people tell me they didn’t book because I wasn’t posting enough. It’s crazy—years ago, you went to a stylist on a prayer, not an Instagram feed.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and mobile stylist serving the DFW area. I specialize in natural hair and protective styling, but I’m really known for the intentional energy I bring into a client’s home. My perfectionism and attention to detail have allowed me to fit right into this work. I have experience in editorial work, where I learned to sharpen my eye, which in turn has given me the chance to bring that same “set ready” finish to my clients. I’ve always been drawn to natural wellness, so I’m currently focused on incorporating herbs and all-natural products into my practice to prioritize hair and scalp health.

I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to carve this path on my own. Starting a mobile business from the ground up while raising my daughter has been my biggest win so far. I’m proving luxury hair care isn’t just for the wealthy. I’m bringing a luxe feel to everyday people who just want quality service in a space where they feel most comfortable.

What makes you happy?
In the moment, I find happiness in the freedom. I’m not exactly where I want to be yet, but I’m grateful for a position that many people don’t get. My work revolves around my life, allowing me to be present and involved with my daughter, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
