Meet Mishty Deb of LaSusa & Deb Attorneys at Law in Central Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mishty Deb.

Mishty, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My partner Raney and I first met working for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

After working there, I worked for a law firm here in Dallas and then as in-house counsel for a financial services company. When I reconnected with Raney we were both in a place where we were tired of working for other people and wanted to do things on our own terms. That is when we decided to start a general practice firm, where we could make our own rules. We wanted to be able to help clients without succumbing to the bill, bill, bill. mentality typical of law firms. We always want to treat our clients fairly and honestly.

During the first few years of our firm, I had a lot of positive experiences with mediation, which is an alternative to litigation. So, I decided to get my mediation certificates and now we also mediate all types of cases including divorces, custody issues, contract disputes, and really any type of case that you can imagine going to litigation.

Mediation is really rewarding because not only is less expensive than litigation, but the parties themselves are in control of the process. This results in settlement agreements that both parties can live with. It really helps people move on with their lives.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Ironically, I think many clients want their lawyers to be aggressive and almost Machiavellian. That is just not who I am. I always come from a place of being practical and I want to advise my clients with the same level-headedness that I would want someone to advise me. I think they appreciate that approach.

A lot of times clients find themselves in unfair situations and the difficult truth is the law isn’t always fair. Many clients aren’t interested in hearing that and, unfortunately, they end up with attorneys who are willing to tell them what they want to hear just to take their money.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a general practice law firm, which means we do a lot of different things from family law to immigration and even probate. In particular, I specialize in working with small businesses, startups, and nonprofits. It is my work with startups that prompted me to establish Sharks In Heels, Inc., which is an entrepreneurship networking group for women.

Most recently I have worked with a lot of nonprofits. I actually have a certification in nonprofit management, which sets me apart from other attorneys and gives me a little more insight into best practices for nonprofits.

In fact, it is through my work for a lot of churches and temples that I first became interested in mediation. The cases that I get to work on as a mediator are probably the most professionally satisfying. The process really empowers the parties to resolve their own disputes.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is one of the best places to start a business. The resources and networking opportunities are endless. Because of the city’s exponential growth, almost everyone here is from somewhere else and because of that I think the people here are very friendly and much more open to genuinely helping each other out.

That being said, Dallas is a pretty big place and the number of opportunities can be overwhelming. You have to take the time to weed through the chaos and find settings that work for you, where you can thrive. Part of why I created Sharks in Heels, Inc. was to create a group for serious entrepreneurs to meet each other because as a women entrepreneur you can sometimes feel like a lone shark in a big ocean.
