Today we’d like to introduce you to James Smith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started with a simple goal — to build something for myself and create opportunities for others. I began cutting hair years ago and quickly realized that barbering was more than just a job for me. It became a way to connect with people, build confidence in others, and provide for my future.
In the beginning, I had to grind and build everything from the ground up. I worked long hours, stayed consistent, and focused on perfecting my craft while building relationships with my clients. Through hard work and determination, I was able to grow my brand and eventually open multiple locations with JT’s Boss Kutz.
Today I’m proud to serve my community while also creating opportunities for other barbers to succeed. My mission is to keep growing the business, help others build their careers, and continue proving that with dedication, discipline, and the right mindset, you can build something great from nothing. Hustling isn’t just something I do — it’s a habit and a lifestyle.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been building and maintaining clientele while also managing the business side of things like staffing, marketing, and expenses. When starting out, there were slow days and times where I had to invest a lot of time and money before seeing results. Another challenge has been finding reliable team members and keeping everything running smoothly across different locations.
What helped me overcome those obstacles was staying consistent, working hard, and focusing on customer service and building relationships with clients. I’ve learned to adapt, stay patient, and keep pushing forward even when things get difficult.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional barber and entrepreneur. I own and operate JT’s Boss Kutz, a growing barbershop brand with multiple locations in Texas. I specialize in clean fades, sharp lineups, beard work, and giving every client a professional, confident look. My goal is to provide high-quality service and create an environment where people feel respected and taken care of.
I have been hustling and working in this industry for many years, building my business from the ground up. I am proud of turning my vision into reality and expanding my brand while helping other barbers build their clientele and make good money. I believe in hard work, consistency, and leading by example.
What sets me apart is my entrepreneurial mindset and dedication to growth. I don’t just cut hair — I build opportunities. I focus on creating strong branding, great customer experiences, and helping the people around me succeed. My motto is “Hustlin is a Habit,” and I live that every day through my work and my businesses.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and building a network has always come down to relationships for me. I believe in surrounding myself with people who are doing things at a higher level and learning from their experience. The best mentors I’ve found were people I met through work, business, and community connections.
What has worked well for me is being consistent, showing respect for people’s time, and asking thoughtful questions. I also try to add value when possible, whether that’s helping someone with a project, sharing ideas, or supporting their business. Over time, those relationships grow naturally into mentorship.
Networking to me isn’t just about meeting people once—it’s about building long-term relationships, staying connected, and learning from others who have already been where you want to go.
