Meet Josh Mahon of Bishop Arts CrossFit in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Mahon.

Josh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started CrossFit as a way to rehabilitate myself back to playing soccer after four knee surgeries. I sat down and creating a plan with my coaches. Several months (now years) of hard work later, and I am more capable and balanced than ever. Through years of coaching and training for competitive CrossFit I found a passion for weightlifting and functional movement. I quit my job coaching CrossFit and started my own weightlifting club out of a friend’s garage. After 2 years of running the gym out of a 500-sq. ft. garage, we found our dream location in Oak Cliff. I have experienced first-hand the restorative process of smart training, and my goal as a coach is to guide our athletes on the journey of a healthier lifestyle.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would describe the journey as a road of various obstacles that must be surpassed for progress, and each success brings our goals that much closer.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bishop Arts CrossFit – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our training facility is located at 650 W. Davis St. offering professional group and individual training, utilizing the CrossFit methodology. CrossFit workouts are comprised of constantly varied functional movements (pushing, pulling, squatting, lifting, running, jumping) preformed at high intensity. Our fitness programming aims to improve your capacity in ten recognized fitness domains cardio-respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. The result is comprehensive physical fitness and restored vitality.

FITNESS FOUNDATIONS / LEVEL 1
Classes designed to educate you on the movements themselves, as well as our culture as a gym, suggested nutrition for your success and goal setting. Foundations is your intro to CrossFit and we’re confident that this course will prepare you to take your health and fitness into your own hands!

PERFORMANCE / LEVEL 2
Group classes designed to lead athletes on the path to challenge your fitness. Develop the skills and ability to do whatever you want outside the gym. All backgrounds, all skill levels and everyone can participate in our CrossFit classes.

WEIGHTLIFTING
USA Weightlifting sanctioned club, designed to develop the strength and performance for the two disciplines in Olympic Weightlifting, the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk. We are a team of recreational and competitive aspirations. Athletes of this program train together weekly and compete 3-5 times a year as part of our team. This is a great program for athletes looking for a traditional Strength and Conditioning program. Weight loss, weight gain and remote coaching programs available.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Our Mission is to offer your children a safe, strong environment to strengthen their bodies, enrich their minds, develop healthy social relationships, and learn to make positive life choices. Weightlifting offers performance driven training to supplement their sport, recreational sport or to gain confidence through smart proven exercise. This program is open to ages 10-18. If your child is younger and interested give us a call!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I will one day have a space our athletes have access to various complimentary programs. I practice yoga regularly and the intensity of weightlifting and CrossFit pairs well with the controlled movement and breathing exercises of yoga. The old saying goes, “out run a lifter, and out lift a runner.” To find balance in your journey to a healthier self you might find various programs, classes or instructors that can have a positive impact on your life. I want our athletes to have access to that type of educational experience.
