Today we’d like to introduce you to Jourdan Kerl.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began at Prairie View A&M University, where I studied and earned my bachelor’s degree in computer science. I was very involved in the sports information department under Athletics and I also worked in the recreation center as a marketing associate. From interviewing the athletes, writing stories for the website, and even editing and design designing promotional material materials, I really served as a jack of all trades.
I’d go on and earn my masters of science in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. There, I truly found my calling because I discovered professional video gaming (esports), and I would go onto to work at numerous different esports events across the country, including Turner Sports ELEAGUE, the Washington Wizards Esports team and the NBA 2K League as a freelance reporter for ESPN.
With that experience under my belt, I’d go on to work at the Dallas Mavericks and Gen.G Esports in both marketing and influencer management positions. My experience has been fast, but it’s ultimately led me to being a self-employed professional developing websites and establishing SEO for my clients well also juggling my work as a multi-hyphenate content creator.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has absolutely not smooth road. Some of the struggles I faced along the way, especially include a lot of self-doubt. Sometimes asking myself if I have enough skills and qualifications to be successful in the positions that I’ve worked I asked myself that even more now as a self-employed website professional. Last year, I was laid off from the agency that I worked at following the acquisition that the company went through. I lived in LA and thought I had it all figured out and all planned but ultimately had to relocate back to Dallas.
However, it has been a net positive because finding my own lane as a contractor has allowed me the opportunity to find the life balance that I’ve always dreamed for my career.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In many ways, I’m a mix of both a professional as a self-employed website specialist and a creative. I hope creators and brands turn their websites into traffic driving assets that are more than just virtual business cards. I started doing this work at the beginning of the year and although it’s not the main thing I’ve known for on social media it is something I am extremely proud of because many of the clients that I work for have no experience of how to set things up online and even have a lot of background in SEO so that’s where I come in.
However, what most people know me for online is my work around gaming, shows, hobbies and being a full-time fangirl, which is what I believe sets me apart. My background in media and the experiences I’ve had working with professional brands and conventions at some of the highest levels gives me an insight into the industry that I believe a lot of people may not have.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people who might not know about me is that I’m really into Korean dramas and I love going to concerts. I share vlogs about this on my main YouTube channel @MissJourdy, but it isn’t something I share often LOL! I also recently took a trip to South Korea with a friend and I am studying how to speak Korean.
